State and East Carolina are also included in the doubled elimination tournament which concludes Saturday. ijij by Elizabeth Leland DTH Contributor "You have to like sports to work on the Chapel Hill police force," said Major Coy Durham, 53, of the Chapel Hill Police Department. He explained that on Saturdays of UNC home football games practically the entire department works. The men are hired for $5 an hour by the UNC Athletic Association to help with traffic problems in the town and security at Kenan Stadium. Approximately 48 men work under the auspices of the association, but the number varies with the popularity of the game. The day of the Notre Dame game 75. men worked because of the large number of people in town for the game, said Police Chief Sidney M. Hilliard. For East Carolina 44 policemen were on duty. On regular weekends, only 10 men work on the force. The policemen's work begins at 1 1 a.m. and usually ends about 5:30 p.m. on football Saturdays. The men have various responsibilities. From noon to 1:30 most of the force works at several major traffic points in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, helping to alleviate the heavy traffic congestion. At the same time, 50 to 80 highway patrolmen handle traffic on state roads and main roads from town. "We try to keep the cars moving," said Hilliard. "As for parking violations, we kind of look the other way as long as they aren't out and out stupid violations." These include blocking sidewalks, fire hydrants and driveways. In such cases the car is usually towed away. Most parking violations are minor, H illiard said. "There's no other place for cars to park. The double-decker parking garage by the hospital has helped, but there still aren't enough spaces." "We don't have enough men to enforce the minor violations," Durham added. v During the game the policemen help the Pinkertons with security at the stadium by keeping spectators away from the fences and helping maintain order. Frequently they also aid people with heat prostration or heart attacks. Five spectators at the Notre Dame game suffered minor heart attacks. The policemen called the rescue squad to take the victims to Memorial Hospital. "People get overheated or have heart attacks many times because they've been drinking in the hot sun," Hilliard said. "Sometimes, as was the case of one lady who had a heart attack, the person hadn't been drinking. The heat alone affected her." The policemen leave the game 15 minutes early to return to their traffic stations in anticipation of the post-game traffic. "The games aren't a burden on the city because the University hires our men," Durham said. "The men enjoy watching the games and don't mind the work. 1 think the only thing we need is to widen the bypass (15-501) to six lanes. The Heels carry a 4-2-1 regular season record into today's opener against UNC G reensboro, one of the two teams which beat Carolina this year. The Heels will also go against Wake Forest today, and the team will face Duke Saturday. Wake and Duke both fell to the Tar Heels during the regular season. With each of the 16 teams entered playing only three games each, no tournament champion will be crowned. Instead, an all star team, with two players at each position and two alternates, will be selected by judges to represent the Deep South section at the Southeast regional tournament later this month. ' Three Tar Heels were selected to the Deep South team last year, forward Vicky Greenwood, halfback Laurie Woodward and goalie Patty Williams. UNC Coach Ann Gregory said that these three have a good chance of being selected again, while "three or four more of our girls have a chance, too." The same selection procedure is followed at the regional tourney, with those all-stars - Staff poto by Martha Stevens UNC's Susan McCandiess dribbles through UNC-Greensboro defenders in a field hockey meeting earlier this season going to another tournament to vie for positions on three national teams that will face international competition. Greenwood was the only UNC player at the nationals last year, but did not gain a berth on one of the teams. Even with all post-season honors being individual, Gregory does not feel that the style of play becomes selfish. "There's no difference. Once you get started, you forget why you're there," she said. "It comes down to the fact that you just want to beat the other team." Woodward, a sophomore from Malvern, Pa., agrees that selfishness is not a problem. "The way it works is that to make yourself Four harriers set for district UNC, which finished a disappointing sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference cross country meet last Saturday, will send four runners to the District 111 meet at Greenville, S.C. this weekend. Representing UNC in district competition Saturday will be Ralph King, Dave Hamilton, William Southerland and Kent Taylor. King was the Tar Heels' top finisher in the ACC meet, placing sixth. The top six teams and top 12 individual finishers not on those teams in the district race will advance to the NCAA meet. "We're not taking a full team because we can see from our finish in the conference that we don't have a team that can contend," said UNC Head Coach Bill Lam. "We don't have a fifth or sixth runner of the caliber necessary for us to be competitive." Traffic on it piles up bumper to bumper. In addition to problems with traffic and the game itself, the police are kept busy on game weekends with problems from the increased nightlife activity. M ore people are on the streets and at bars on Friday and Saturday nights of football weekends than on other weekends but no extra policemen are on duty. "We pretty busy from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday and even longer on Saturday," Durham said. "There are more noise complaints and arrests for drunken driving and disorderly conduct." The weekend of the Notre Dame game several people were charged with disorderly conduct. A group was picked up for fighting in front of Town Hall, a local bar. "But people are always fighting in front of Town Hall," Durham said. "There's just more of it on football weekends." Despite the extra problems and heavier work load, most of the members of the Chapel Hill Police Department seem to enjoy the game weekends. "We've been going to the games for so many years, that we know what's going to happen," said Durham, a veteran of 30 years. "It's easy." rri -fc m-j 7 Mil 1 UNA NEW MENU -OVER 100 DISHES YOU CAN CHOOSE NEW LARGER DINING ROOM LUNCH SPECIAL-1 1:30-2:00 MON-FRI ONLY DINNER DAILY 4:30-9:30 O SZE SHU AN O CANTONESE O MANDARIN ff IMPORTED BEERS & WINES ABC PERMIT 2701 Hillsborough Rd. Gregory said that the all-star format for post-season play is a good idea, since the Northeast, led by Pennsylvania, holds a virtual monopoly in field hockey schools. "We have some girls that deserve to be in national competition, and if the tournament was a team affair, they would ne er make it." Gregory said.
