Burstyn, who also won a Tony Award for Best Actress in the Broadway hit Same Time Next Year, received an Oscar for her title role in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. She has been nominated for two Academy Awards for her portrayal of Lois Farrow in The Last Picture Show and the distraught mother in The Exorcist. Alice was Burstyn's own project. She discovered the script, located financial backing, picked the director, Martin Scorsese, and helped select the cast and crew. Burstyn's other film credits include The King of Marvin Gardens, Good-bye Charlie, For Those Who Think Young, Tropic of Cancer, Alex in Wonderland and Harry and Tonto. New York Times critic Vincent Canby called Burstyn "one of the few actresses at work today who is able to seem appealing, tough, intelligent, funny and bereft, all at approximately the same moment."
