Tuesday, November 11, 1975 The Daily Tar He si 5 Soccer season ends on strong note X i ' : " I - 4 ? 'jt, i . . . ,J. 10 I I , S . I I Staff photo by Steve Causey j UNC's Martin Trimble dives to block a Clemson shot on goal as forward John Rhodes (5) looks on. by Grant Vcsburgh Staff Writer Team unity, better conditioning and the emergence of some talented freshmen were recurring themes as members of the 1975 UNC soccer team talked about the varsity season, which ended Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over arch-rival Duke, giving the Tar Heels a 7-4 record. They also finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. After an opening win over Belmont Abbey, the Heels fell unexpectedly to Appalachian State. After downing Davidson, they suffered another narrow loss to Rollins. They won over East Carolina and then played national power Clemson in a close 3-1 loss. At this point, the team's record was a mediocre 3-3. They then went on to sweep four of the last five games, shutting out the final two opponents, Maryland and Duke. "I thought we finished up nicely," UNC Head Coach Marvin Allen said. "It took "some time for the team to play together -(referring to the losses to Appalachian State and Rollins), but after moving some people around, we played well. I thought the group was in better condition," he said. "They were more aggressive, wanting to win. The hard work just made for a more conducive atmosphere for winning." Brothers Kenyon and Eric Cook agreed that after the initial inconsistency of the team, the season was satisfying. "Was 1 satisfied with the season?" Kenyon asked. "Well, yes and no. At times we played like we were capable of playing. But other times, we suffered a letdown and our play was totally unrepresentative of our ability. "As a senior, 1 came into the season hopeful, but we lost a couple of close ones. Taking second in the ACC was nice, but by losing to State, we lost our bid for NCAA post-season play." "1 was very pleased with the second half of the season "junior back Eric said. "We shut out both Maryland and Duke. Also, with our top fullback out the last couple of games, we had some young people starting four freshmen at one time. Miller, fencers grab medals in foil open by Pete Mitchell Staff Writer i The old bromide, "if you want something done right, do it yourself proved itself- again Sunday as UNC Head Fencing Coach Ron Miller donned the mask, picked up a foil, paid his two dollar entry fee, and proceeded to tie three fencers for first place in the. men's division of the foil open held in Woollen Gym. The four way tie was decided by a run off that N.C. State's Steve Dickman won, followed by UNC star Charlie Brown, Carolina's, Alan Knight, and Coach Miller. For Miller, it was his first competition in a foil open in five years. These pre-season tournaments are open to any member of the Amateur Fencers. League of America. He competed earlier this year in a sabre open. Duke, Clemson, and State all participated in the tournament here Sunday. UNC won two out of three medals in the women's foil and five out of eight men competed in the finals before the four-way tie took place in the men's. Dickman, a freshman at State, was also recruited by Carolina but received a full scholarship from State. "We wanted him to come here," Miller said, "but it came down to whether he wanted the money or to compete in a lot of tournaments. State doesn't enter that many opens so he doesn't get much experience. We don't give out many fencing scholarships anyway, and get 95 per cent of our fencers right out of physical education classes. But we're in a lot of tournaments i ? r i f 5 .ft.:- '"4 - f. m 4 I ! I I 6 4 'si'- 4. Brown recently graduated from UNC and is a former" Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) epee champ and was. All-ACC twice in foil. Next semester,' Brown will become an assistant coach under Miller. N.C. State freshman Louise Ackerman fought her way to a win over Carolina's Allison Barrett and Garney Ingram in the women's foil. According to Miller, the women's team has been a disappointment thus far. The men's team has been "a pleasant surprise" with the inexperienced Scott Corzine, Mark Scott, and Ken Williams presents the contributing while top fencer Jim Krauss is out with a pulled ligament in his knee. The men's team swings into action again this Sunday at Duke for epee and sabre opens. The women's team will participate in the Penn State Invitational meet Nov. 21-23. The regular season begins December 3 with a dual meet against N.C. State. "In the four games we lost, we averaged giving up 2.5 goals per game. In our wins, we averaged giving up less than I goal per game. Our offensive average, however, was 2.3 for the season." "That's right," Kenyon said. "We outshot every team but Clemson (ranked number one in the NCAA) and Appalachian. "I think the real thing was being a close knit team," Eric said. "We all became good friends and played together as a bunch of buddies and not a bunch of individuals." Junior fullback Olaf Kampschmidt also cited the team's closeness as the vital cog in the Tar Heels success. "Everybody had a lot of enthusiasm. They want it a lot. There was just a positive wave length." Kampschmidt also pinpointed improved personnel as a main influence. "Most definitely, Martin Trimble (freshman goalie), Timmy Fenton (junior forward) and I guess myself, in getting people fired up, improved through the season." Allen called Trimble "an excellent goal keeper. He got better as the season progressed. Just added play and overcoming a bad habit or two made the difference." "I was pretty proud of my performance and the team's," Trimble said. "I think I improved with experience. I really felt like the team was close, too just a good bunch of guys." Allen also gave credit to the maturity of freshmen Trimble, Steve Scott, Roy Baroff and Ed Fenimore. "Other years," Allen said, "we brought up freshmen before they were ready. This year the four of them played up to our expectations." Graduation will have a definite impact on UNCs soccer program as backs Zoltan Berky, Chris Douglass, Kenyon Cook, and captains John Rhodes and Rob Hassold will not return. Forward Mark Johnson, injured for a majority of the season and back-up goalieTodd Wells must also be replaced. The Tar Heels, however, feel that the winning attitude gained this season will carry over. "We have some fine young players," Allen said. "We should keep right on improving and have the same positive attitude." -. f v 1 Staff photo by Martha Stevens UNC's Doug Monroe Sport briefs Student tickets for the UNC-Russian basketball game next Saturday are still available at the Carmichael Auditorium ticket office.
