i Wednesday, December 3, 1975 The Daily Tsr Heel 5 i h I I Team idea appealing to Bradley by Kevin Barris Staff Writer In 1973, Carolina had one of its best years ever in basketball recruiting, with three of this year's starters matriculating that .falL Last year, the Tar Heels recruited Phil Ford, who went on to become Most Valuable Player in the ACC tournament. Ji'S Faf year was deferent, however. UNC did not have as good a year recruiting. Of the four freshmen on scholarship, one, Dudley Bradley has shown he will be a big asset for the far Heels this season. - The Edgewood, Md. native said-he came to UNC for the usual reasons, academic reputation, location, etc., but he -says it was the philosophy of the basketball program that led him to choose Carolina. "They play as a team here," he said, "and not as individuals. It's not just one-on-one, it's team offense and team defense. I'd rather play that way." Bradley says it is the team concept that attracts him the most to basketball. Although other sports allow an individual to excel, Bradley finds that the reason he's played basketball so long is the team oneness that is there. "In some sports," he said, "one particular player is supposed to be the greatest, and nobody else gets any credit. Like in football, the backs are supposed to be the best, but in basketball everyone gets credit. I'd rather just be an equal instead of a standout." In high school, Bradley was a standout r r 6' .. and was depended upon to do most of the team's scoring and rebounding. He finds himself in a different situation now, Final meet before holidays Swimmers snap lerps by Dave Kirk Staff Writer I The UNC men's swim team snapped ! "It's a relief, actually, to see the pressure on other people," he said. "That way, when 1 come into a game, I don't have as much pressure on me. I don't have to rebound everything that comes off, or shoot every shot." Like most freshmen, Bradley has had problems adjusting to college, both academically and athletically. He credits some of the upperclassmen on the team Carolina went ahead of the Terrapins with an impressive showing in the 400-meter medley relay, as Mark List, Karl Thiele, Alan Toll, and Mike Reock swam three seconds faster than last year's best time. Rich DeSelm turned in two excellent performances, winning the 1000 and 500 meter freestyle events. List and Mitch Kolesaire finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-meter backstroke, while Toll and Greg Sanchez followed suit in the 200-meter butterfly. Steve McDonald won both 100- and 200-meter freestyle. Besides having to deal with the change from high school to college, Bradley must also become accustomed to being in the ACC, the most competitive basketball conference in the country. Fencers face Wolfpack in 75-76 season opener by Pete Mitchell Staff Writer The sign on UNC Head Fencing Coach Ron Miller's office door in Woollen Gym reads, "Carolina Fencing The Ultimate Sport." In Miller's previous eight years, that statement has been very close to the truth as Carolina fencers have rolled up 96 dual meet victories while suffering only eight defeats. The challenge for this year's team is to capture another Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship, a task accomplished the last five years with little trouble. This season, however, the road to victory may be more treacherous. The fencers open their regular season today against the improved swordsmen from N.C. State. State has recruited some of the finest high school talent in the country. Led by freshmen Steve Dickman and Louise Ackerman, the Wolfpack should provide a strong challenge not only in today's Raleigh match, but throughout the season. The Carolina squad, ranked 1 4th nationally last year, is returning just four starters. Senior Alan Knight and junior A.J. Keane lead a nine-person starting lineup. All-America Jim Krause is out with a leg injury. The women's starting team consists of Allison Barrett, Garney Ingram, Cathy Swan, and Kathi Kronenfeld. In pre-season matches, both the men's and women's teams have done well, taking most of the medals in each competition. Most challenges, were provided by N.C. State. "State is much improved with their freshmen additions, but we'd still have to be favored in the match," said Miller. "I think everyone is looking forward to the regular season now and getting a little tired of just practicing. It should be a good opener." The success of this year's team depends on talented, but inexperienced fencers like Scott Corzine, Mark Scott, and Chris Collins as Miller looks for depth in his lineup, another ACC championship, and another year of justification for the sign on his door. Four wrestlers place by Lee Pace Staff Writer Following an impressive season opening in the Carolina Invitational, the UNC wrestling team placed four men among the top six of three classes in the Southern Open last weekend in Chattanooga, Tenn. Scott Conkwright provided the Tar Heels' finest performance in the tournament, an annual event featuring many of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers. Conkwright finished second at 118 after losing to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Jim Batten in the finals by a single point. His brother Chris claimed third at 134, his lone loss being to Jimmy Carr, a former Olympian. Two Tar Heels, David Breece and Curtis Rudolph, took fifth and sixth places respectively at 126. "We didn't do super" said UNC W restling Coach Bill Lam, "but we got a lot of good experience. Everybody got to wrestle four or five matches. I feel we're ready to go into our dual match season."
