Howard K. Smith reports. At 10 p.m. Saturday on Channel 5. Masterpiece Theatre Upstairs. Downstairs begins its fourth and final season with an episode set in 1919. World War I has ended and cheering crowds line the streets of London, but there is little to cheer about at Eaton Palace. James is a brooding and reclusive widower, his newly remarried father is moving out, and the servants are beginning to realize they may no longer be needed. At 10 p.m. Saturday on Channel 4. Roots Adapted from Alex Haley's best seller, Roots dramatizes a century in Haley's family history from his ancestors life in 18th-century tribal Africa to their emancipation in the post Civil War South. The eight-part drama begins in Africa with the birth of Kunta Kinte, Haley's great-great-great-greatgrandfather. For Kunta, village life is carefree in its simplicity and rich in tradition and, at 17, he undergoes the grueling rite of manhood. But soon after his initiation, the slavers arrive and put Kunta in chains aboard a ship bound for America. The series will be shown over the next seven evenings. At 9 p.m. Sunday on Channel 5. Rex Reed liked both of them Two 1976 films, Taxi Driver and Seven Beauties, debut this weekend as part of the Union's film series. There is free admission to Seven Beauties, but the more violent Taxi Driver has a $ 1 admission charge. Taxi Driver stars Robert De Niro as a New York City cab driver, Travis Bickle, who becomes compulsively involved with the city's night people while driving his beat through the seamy parts of the city. He moves alone through the crowd, detached, until his trigger for violence finally gives way. Cybill Shepherd stars as the classy, upright woman who passes through his life with such a great impact. The explicit violence, which earned the film its very controversial reviews, occurs for the most part at the end of the film. Seven Beauties is considered one of Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmuller's best films. She also wrote and directed widely acclaimed films such as Swept A way and The Seduction of Mimi. The swarthy but sensuous deckhand who swept the wealthy and beautiful Raffaella off her bitchy little feet in Swept A way also stars in Seven Beauties. He is Giancarlo Giannini, Wertmuller's most frequently used actor. He plays Pasqualino, a would-be mafxoso who winds up in a Nazi concentration camp where he goes to any lengths of strategy to survive. Taxi Driver shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. tonight in Carroll Hall. Seven Beauties shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday in Carroll and is preceded by the short Bags. Office in Graham Memorial Building. Admission prices are $4.50 on weekdays and $4.90 on the weekend. Overloaded transformer causes eiaht-hour blackout at Estes Park At least 36 residents of the Estes Park apartment complex were without electricity for almost eight hours Thursday when a transformer serving two buildings overloaded and burned. A spokesperson for Duke Power blamed Wednesday's 10 degree low temperature, which he said prompted Estes Park residents to use more electricity than the equipment could handle. Electricity was off between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The transformer that burned was designed to cut off automatically when the power consumed reached two and one-half times the normal capacity. However, the transformer heated so rapidly Thursday morning that it was on fire' before the automatic switch could turn off. The burned transformer was replaced by a larger model with greater capacity. . ha!H.ba.liH SIXTH BIG WEEKL .2:00 4:30 7:00 9:30 The tnoct exciting original motion picture event of all time. g ICnItat; SEX IS nOTORLYtin tiST BUTdUJESPOrl WITH I niZTUZZZ II DAILY AT: i I I'l'HliHMiM io 3.-oo0 II U-nll 4ii J 7a 9:00l 1 1 5 A Trans Amefton Beleate mmj J 0 YE WDBS-FM 107 PRESENTS "NV !.!?! 3 WDBS-FM 107 PRESENTS THE PROGRAM JEAN RENOIR'S "RULES OF THE GAME 5:00 7:00 9:00 ENDS SAtV HELD OVER 1:30 3:30 5:30 7:30 9:30 mmssm WDBS-FM CHAPEL HILL LATE SHOW jqm WDBS-FM LATE SHOW nucrmM SEAN CONNERY IN I VOIGHT "MIDNIGHT HOFFMAN f "GOLDFINGER" FRI. & SAT. l 11:30 COWBOY" FRI. & SAT.
