Opium BANGKOK, Thailand (UPI) Thai and Burmese troops in the poppy-growing "Golden Triangle" in Southeast Asia are fighting the biggest opium war in recent history, according to reports reaching Bangkok Sunday. The results will in large measure determine ' how much heroin reaches the United States and Europe this year. Using . U.S.-supplied helicopters and money provided by the United Nations, Thai and Burmese troops have begun a major push against the warlords who control the opium trade in the hill country where the borders of Burma, Thailand and Laos meet. Weekend reports from sources in the "Golden Triangle" said up to 3,000 troops are involved in this year's "poppy war," which in the past has been limited to a few hundred' armed men representing international authorities trying to stamp out the drug trade. The joint Thai-Burmese forces are pitted against the Shan ethnic minority and the Chinese-backed Burmese Communist party, which has seized control of the poppy growing Shan states that border China. Informants estimate the crop from Burma alone this year will exceed 600 tons, probably the largest harvest in history. They said the amount of heroin and other opium-based drugs to reach the illegal market in the United States and Europe will be directly affected by the outcome of this remote "war." The Shans, who comprise more than 5 million of Burma's 30 million inhabitants, are the largest of more than a dozen groups demanding limited autonomy within the Union of Burma, headed by President Ne Win. It is Ne .Win's government which is receiving the generous' foreign aid to suppress the opium growing, cultivation and shipping. Sources insist they not be identified in news reports about the opium trade or attempts to wipe it out. "If my name appears in print, I may be fired by my government, rebuked by representatives at the next negotiating conference or assassinated by Khun Sa " one Burmese official said. Khun Sa is a 42-year-old Chinese born in the Shan states who has become the opium warlord of the Golden Triangle. His Chinese predecessor, Lo Sing Han, was betrayed by an ally in the web of opium intrigue in 1975 and is now under sentence of death in Burma. One rebel leader said all of the aid going to the Thai and Burmese government is "good money going after bad. It does not attack the root of the problem." Asked what the root was, the leader said: "It's the political bulb that sprouts into poppies. Ne Win's forces can kill many of us, can interdict the opium caravans and bomb our refineries. But he cannot win a military victory. Tar Heel Classifieds Cost Only $1.50 3 Bell motorcycle helmets for sale. Two 8ell-Star. one Bell Super Magnum. 120 for all three or will deal.
