Christopher Alvan, a UNC freshman from
Greenville, N.C., died Sunday in an accident
following a sport parachute jump. Alvan was
jumping with the UNC Skydiver's Club at a
site near Louisburg, N.C.
Tony Cockrell, area safety officer for the
U.S. Parachute Association, said Alvan's
parachute was caught in a tree near the
jumpsite, and he was suspended 15 feet
above the ground.
Cockrell said Alvan apparently tried to
cut the belt -like riser lines that connected his
harness to the caught parachute and was
killed when one of the slack lines caught
around the back of his helmet and snapped

Cockrell said it was not unusual for a
skydiver to land in a tree, but that the
accident was highly unusual. "To my
knowledge, this has never happened before.
It is a terrible freak accident," Cockrell said.
Alvan had completed a week of classes in
diving and was taking his final instruction in
practical aspects of jumping at the site
Sunday.
Most of the club's members had not gone
to the site Sunday because of the cold
weather, according to Cockrell, but the
winds had died down by the afternoon to
make conditions safe for diving.
