MUHIIIII" Thursday, February 10, 1977 The Dally Tar Heel 5 J mm y-4 'WW.-.; IB! testis; r 1 J Heel women visit Virginia to defend VI T title by Will Wilson Staff Writer The old adage about tournament play reads, "Never look past your first game." For the UNC women's basketball team, that may be hard to live up to when it begins play tonight in the second Virginia Invitational Tournament (VIT). The Tar Heels, the defending champions, face the host Cavaliers tonight at 7 in the third opening-round game of the day. Looming ahead, however, are possible contests against two of the three tournament teams ranked in the nation's top 20. The presence of N.C. State (8th-ranked), Old Dominion (12th) and Maryland (17th) means that a successful title defense by Carolina would almost be enough by itself to make the season a success for the Tar Heels. Other first-round games today match N.C. State and Madison at 1 1 a.m.. Old Dominion and South Carolina at 1 p.m. and Maryland and Wake Forest at 9 p.m. The UNC-UVa winner will play the Maryland Wake victor in the semifinals. Staff photo by Rouse Wilson If Virginia women's basketball coach Dan Bonner had had his way, UNO's freshman Shelia Judge (left) would be wearing a Cavalier uniform this weekend in the Virginia Invitational Tournament. Judge chose to be a Tar Heel, however, and will help her teammates defend the VIT title they won a year ago. Rainbow soccer season opens Saturday The 1977 Rainbow Soccer season opens with registration and clinics this weekend. Registration will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 12 and 19 at the Muirhead Soccer Stadium on 15-501 by-pass at Glen Lennox. Coach and referee clinics will be held at 1 1 a.m. both Saturdays. Team assignments will be issued from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 26. Practice begins Monday, Feb. 28, and jerseys will be issued and the first matches played the Weekend of March 5-6. Eight weekends of matches will end April 23-24. "Because of the continual need to upgrade skills and educate players to the sport of soccer and the spirit of Rainbow Soccer," Kip Friday, the consolation semifinals will be at 1 1 a.m. and 1 p.m. The championship semifinals are set for 7 and 9 that night. The consolation final is scheduled for II a.m. Saturday, with the championship game to follow at 1 p.m. Carolina and Virginia met back in December in Carmichael Auditorium, with the Tar Heels winning, 60-54. The Cavaliers' are one of the shortest teams on the UNC schedule, and they relied on their outside shooting for nearly all their points in the earlier game. Forward Marilyn Beery, who came off the bench to score 15 points in that game, has averaged that, amount over the season and leads the Virginia scoring. Guard Kathy Williams is second, averaging 13.7 points a game. Since the December meeting, neither team has done as well as they would have liked. Carolina, beset by injuries to starters Joyce Patterson and Joan Leggett and reserve Mickey McGlade, has struggled to a 7-9 record. Against teams outside North Carolina, UNC has lost six straight games. Virginia stood 4-6 through last week and lost its first four games after the Christmas break before defeating Bridgewater. The UNC-UVa game is expected to be the closest of the opening-round games. In the other three, the ranked teams are heavily favored to advance to the semifinals. Last year, Carolina defeated Virginia, Clemson and Maryland in winning the initial VIT. N.C. State and UNC had been the pre tourney favorites, but Maryland knocked off the Wolf pack in a semifinal upset. I n addition to Virginia, the Tar H eels have faced a couple of other tournament teams already this season. In December, they lost at N.C. State, 71-58, and three weeks ago they lost at home to Old Dominioni6-56. Ward, president and program director of Rainbow Soccer said, "it is necessary that parents, players and friends of Rainbow become involved as coaches and officials. The time factor is less than four hours per week, and the rewards in expanded friends and insight into our sport are tremendous." Ward said carpool arrangements should be made before registration forms are turned in. People who want to play on the same team must register as individuals. Rainbow Soccer, according to its officials, is a nonviolent recreational soccer program with decreased emphasis on winning and is open to any person, regardless of age, sex or skill.
