FOR COMPLETE COURSE INFORMATION: Summer Institute University Film Study Center, Inc. Box 275 Cambridge, Mass. 02138 (617)253-7612 Gay-day signs no April Fool's The yellow sign on the bulletin board read: AT LAST A WAY TO 'SPOT ONE' IF YOU'RE GAY WEAR BLUE JEANS ON FRIDAY Another one was proclaiming Friday as "Gay Day," and announced that gays would be showing their gayness by wearing one of the most popular garbs worn on campus: blue jeans. No, these signs are not April Fool's jokes. These signs are for real, according to Sue Johnston, one of the coordinators for the Southeastern Gay Conference to be held this weekend at UNC. "It's for real, but a joke at the same time." she said. It is being done to hype the conference and make people more aware of gays. Johnst6n said she believes it will make the point that gays and straights wear the same clothes and are real persons. "It (Friday) will probably turn out to be the best-dressed day on campus." Johnston said. panel plan. Open-panel plans allow a member to be partially reimbursed for using legal services other than those provided, while closed-panel plans limit members to attorneys provided by the plan. Bernholz said the closed-panel plan is similar to the Student Health Service Program. "The student pays the fee for the service as part of his student fee,' she said. "Then he uses that particular service when he needs it." The statute prohibits the N.C. State Bar. Association from approving closed-panel plans. In the filed complaint, Bernholz and the other plaintiffs contend that a closed-panel plan would best serve the needs of UNC students. They said amending the original plan to include the opt-out feature raised the cost of the plan and decreased the amount o services that could be offered to students. "Even a partial reimbursement from Student Government fees reduces the funds we have to work with because we are on a fixed budget," Bernholz said. Four cases are cited in the complaint in which the U.S. Supreme Court has determined that persons have the right to retain attorneys under conditions of their choice; including closed-panel plans. Bernholz said the defendants have filed a motion to have the case moved to Raleigh. If this motion is granted, no decision will be made in Charlotte. April Fool Messages Gary and Lowell. Taylor said he sent a letter to the physical plant last Friday asking why the air conditioning was not on. In response, the plant set up monitoring equipmeqt in the lower level of the library, and promised to act on the matter. The undergraduate library is heated by heat generated from people and lights. "With a 1,700-person capacity, the library can get a little hot at times," Taylor said. "I'm glad to hear that air conditioning is coming back on." Taylor said library use appeared to be down due to the heat. "Circulation for H ouse was dow n in January, and for Wilson it was not. This might be due to the heat, but that would be hard to prove."
