Student Bookstores, Inc., provides
complete selection of old, new tomes

Students searching for another alternative to
long lines, high prices and low rates of return on
books they bring back to the Student Store now
have another bookstore in Chapel Hill that caters
to their textbook needs. Student Bookstores, Inc.,
is a privately owned business that hopes to
provide service to UNC students comparable or
better than the present service.
Owners Sylvia and Ken Stapleton believe that
their stores can provide an alternative that was
not present under the Student Stores system.
"Anytime there's a bookstore on campus they
can't be competitive," said Sylvia Stapleton.
"Students just didn't have a choice." Student
Bookstore provides lower prices on used books
and comparable or slightly lower prices on new
books than Student Stores.
Student Bookstores, Inc., provides texts for
every course listed this fall at UNC. They buy a list
of the texts from Student Stores.
This is the second branch of Student
Bookstores, Inc. to open. A Durham branch has
been successful in the past in a similar situation.
There is no conflict between Student Stores and
Student Bookstores, Inc. "They've been very
cooperative," Stapleton said.
The Student Stores have been criticized in the
past for not paying students enough for books
they sell back to the stores. Student Bookstores,
Inc., provides a normal 40 buyback rate. On
some books, they pay 50, and at the end of the
semester they pay 50 on all books. -
Student Bookstores tries to buy back all books
presented. Books that are not bought back at the
Student Stores can be bought back here, because
it is possible the books can be used somewhere
else, the owners say. A wholesale rate is applied to
books that have been discontinued everywhere.
