UNC food services refuse to change student's plan By BARRY SMITH Staff W riter Two students have complained to the Student Consumer Action Union about the refusal of the student food service to change a student's meal plan to a less expensive one. A spokesperson for Servomation Mathias Inc., which provides on campus food service at Chase Cafeteria, the Pine Room cafeteria and the Union Snack Bar, told the Daily Tar Heeltesl Wednesday that no changes in a student's meal plan would be made until after Sept. I. Accoiding to the spokesperson, who refused to identify herself, a student could not get a more expensive or a less expensive plan until then. But Amy Whitley, a freshman from Wendell, said a Servomation official told her that she could change to a more expensive plan but could not change to a less expensive plan. Whitley said she had applied for the five-days-per-week, three-meals-per-day plan and wanted to change to the any-ten-meas-per-week plan. Servomation policy states that meal plan cards are non-refundable unless the student withdraws fcom the University Umstead Psychiatric Hospital Volunteers Umstead Psychiatric Hospital needs student volunteers lor the tall semester. Any interested student may pick up an application in Room 102 of the Y-Building. Orientation meetings will be held on Sept. 7 and 8 at 7:30PM in Room 213 of the Carolina Union. Volunteers should plan to attend one of these meetings. The Servomation spokesperson told the DTH that only students who had applied for a meal-plan ticket and had not yet paid for it or had obtained a waiver letter from the Student Aid Office could change or cancel their applications. Whitley said she had obtained a waiver letter, which assures Servomation that money from the Student Aid Office will be forthcoming to pay for the meal plan. If Servomation policy were adhered to, Whitley would be unable to obtain a less expensive meal plan. She also would be unable to obtain any' other plan. Whitley said she was told, however, that she could change to a more expensive plan. The spokesperson told the D TH that any alteration of a student's meal plan would be made on an individual basis. She said she did not know the criteria for altering meal plans, adding that Dick Patton, Servomation manager, handled those situations and decided the criteria for making changes, Patton could not be reached for comment on Whitley's complaint.
