6 Anniversary Supplement Thursday, February 23, 1078 A typical atypical 'Tar Heel' day The pictures on these two pages show what f appears to be a neat, clean operation. Lest anyone believe that the production of the Daily Tar Heel is a neat, clean operation, allow me to dissuade you; one look at the office shows that we're a bunch of slobs. As anyone who has entered the office between 3 and 7 p.m. can testify, it's a madhouse. Reporters arc working on assignments. Photographers talk shop. Editors shout usually with profanity for copy and headlines. Some 50 student reporters cover their owl) V beats, much the same as reporters on city dailies do. And much to the distress of some . "sources," the DTH reporters are no less relentless in getting their stories. From these stories, the department editors ' , pick the best or most timely and plug them for inclusion in the paper for the next day. As readers have noticed, we run small papers, and competition for stories is keen. By evening the reporters have left to study, or drink or something, and the editors settle down to lay out the pages. If all goes well, the editorial page is finished by 5 p.m., the inside pages are tinished by 7 p.m., and the front page is completed by 9 p.m. How often does all go well? How often does the sun rise in the West? When there is only a handful of editors left in the DTH office, most of the action is in the composition shop, located in the basement of the Carolina Union. There, the stories are set on a typesetter which punches out something like a ticker tape, which is fed into a remarkable little widget which reads the tape and produces the story on glossy paper as it will appear in the paper.. The printed copy is then pasted onto a sheet exactly the same size as the printed page of the DTH. This work is supposed to leave the composition shop at midnight, when it's picked up by an employee of Hinton Press in Mebane, 30 legal minutes northwest of Chapel Hill. How often is the paper ready at midnight? It's now 1:56. At Hinton Press, the page is photographed to produce a 15x21-inch negative, which is checked for stray marks, before being used to make a printing plate. This plate is placed on the "offset" press and is used to print 17.5(H) DTH. BEN CORNELIUS I I M v t III l ' ft I .,....,,,:.. v .3- l I A,:'"- ,:. i. I Si :i f ' f ..?....
