Auto larcenies up, double last month in city, say police By EVELYN SAHR Staff Writer The number of attempted car larcenies in Chapel Hill skyrocketed in March, according to figures released by city police recently. Chapel Hill police reported 43 attempted larcenies during the month of March. This number compares to 22 during February and 22 during January. Officer Ralph Pendergraph explained that money, radios, tape players and CB's are things most commonly stolen. He said, though, that there have also been reports of stolen hubcaps. Pendergraph noted there are two areas where car larcenies tend to occur most often. These are restaurants and bars, and apartment complexes. "Restaurants and bars are ideal for larcenies," Pendergraph said. "People tend to park their cars alongside streets that aren't well lighted after parking lots are full, and that is the perfect condition in which to commit a larceny." Pendergraph speculated that the larcenists are not part of a professional group because there doesn't appear to be any pattern of thefts. He noted there apparently is no fencing going on because such an operation usually requires only one type of stolen good. "There probably are no more than two or three groups of people committing these larcenies." Pendergraph said, "however, they obviously have a good place to dispose of the stolen goods because we haven't recovered any ol the merchandise yet." Pendergraph suggested two ways in which to deter potential vandalism to cars. "First of all. try not to leave any items in your car out in the open," he said. "Even if you just leave an empty bag out, a vandalist might break into your car to see what is inside of it. "Secondly, the owner should engrave all his valuables w ith his North Carolina license number. If this isn't done we have no way to trace back stolen merchandise to its rightful owner." Pendergraph also requested that if any one sees suspicious persons loitering around parking areas, they call campus police if the parking area is on campus, or call 91 1 if the area is off campus. 0k' Write a letter 'Or say it personally in the DTH classifieds Get Your Point Across DTH ADIA PARTIME PRESSURED AGAIN? Orange county implements uniform emergency number By LOU HARNED Staff Writer If you're wondering what that little blue sticker is doing in your phone bill this month, it's to remind you of the new emergency phone number in Orange County. The county, after six years of planning, has joined over 300 American communities in establishing a three-digit countywide emergency number the 9 1 1. By dialing 9 1 1, callers can reach hospital, police or fire emergency personnel via a central dispatcher located in the Chapel Hill Police Department. The service, which began in March, applies to all Orange County residents. It eliminates 23 different emergency numbers for Durham, Chatham and Orange counties. All nonemergency calls should be made to the regular departments and not to 9 1 1. Aid comes directly to the scene, thus reducing crime rates and speeding rescues. Communications Director Robert Blake said. "The whole county worked together to get this service, and we've had excellent response. The proposal for the new emergency system began in 1 972 with a joint proposal from the Chatham-Orange Joint Emergency Medical Service. Then grant money helped establish a radio-dispatch service which Memorial Hospital used for communication between rescuers and hospital doctors. Via radio the doctors could read cardiograms and charts to promote more effective rescues. Last August, Southern Bell said mistake calls, installation and maintenance costs would prohibit a countywide three-digit number. Nevertheless. Southern Bell worked out the problems and is now paying for the service's publicity. "I think when Southern Bell realized Chapel Hill had committeed itself to the three-digit number, they went ahead and said they would do what they could," Garrett said. She said the grant pays for the service for one year, and after that Orange County will pay for the service with taxes. The cost will be about $24,000 for the phone lines. $9.90 $69.90 $99.90 $39.90 $12.90 THE MUSIC SERVICE, INC. NEW & USED MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS & Accessories.
