" Festival has come and
gone. The plucking, strumming,
story swapping, soft drink
slurping, clogging, clapping,
quilting and crafting celebration
is but a memory for some.
For others the celebration is a
way of life that moves on with them
wherever they go...
Stanley T. Hicks, mountain
minstrel and craftsman, strums
many a sizzling ditty on the silvery
steel strings of his handmade
dulcimer.
Stanley is not only a musician
and craftsman, but also a
storyteller and dancer who
stomps, shuffles and high-kicks
his way through buck dances with
a zesty spirit that belies his 67
years.
Stanley is one of over three
hundred musicians and craftsmen
and women who participated in
the N.C. Folklife Festival held in
Durham, July 1-4.
Stanley and his wife make their
home in Vilas, a town tucked away
in a Stone Mountain Valley. He left
the hills for a few days to share his
knowledge and show his talents to
the folks who came to see and
hear.
