The Carolina women's golf team excelled in all three areas during the 72-hoIe AIAW national tournament held in central Florida June 14-17. Playing on the West Course at the Greenlefe Golf and Raquet Club, Tar Heels Susan Cary, Janet Haire, Cathy Graham, Bonnie Bell and Stephanie Kornegay finished 10th with a team-record 1255, 37 strokes behind champion University of Miami. The squad made a 76-stroke improvement over last year's 20th-place finish. This accomplishment was aided by their third day total of 299 which shattered the previous team one-round record by seven strokes and tied the low one-day score in the AIAW Nationals. Stated Coach Dot Gunnells, "The fact that we played there before helped." Raleighite Susan Cary profited from the aid by ending her sophomore year with a 18-hole team-record 72. Her four day total was 314. Sophomore Janet Haire, a Florida native, shone in the Sunshine state by tying her best one round score with a 73. Freshman Cathy Graham of Michigan also fared well with a personal record 74. Bonnie Bell, the only senior on the team and a Southern Pines native, "saved her best for her last collegiate tournament," according to Gunnells, by having rounds of 75, 76 and 78. Her total for four days: 314. Slightly less successful than her teammates was Stephanie Kornegay who shot a 318. After the first 18 holes, the Tar Heels were 16th, then they climbed to 13th after 36 and then made the Friday cut (only the top 15 teams were allowed to continue) by coming in 9th. Their goal says Coach Gunnells was to "make the cut." Competing against the Tar Heels were such standouts as Florida, Florida International University (the pre tournament favorite), Texas, SMU, Furman and Arizona State. For Ms. Gunnells coaching this year's team has been a "great experience." Next year, though, looks even more promising. Only one golfer is graduating this year and the remainder of the team will be gaining experience in tournaments this summer. Coach Gunnells' goal next year will be to "stay in the Top Ten." That task will probably be made easier by the performance this year by the women's golf team. Explains Ms. Gunnells, "Our tenth place finish will give them a lot of confidence." LATE 3IGHT AT THE .
