An Interstate Adventure

After 700-miles of highway patrolmen swooping out of the
westering sun like Stuka dive bombers, a sumptuous yet inexpensive
meal of country-cooking at the Cracker Barrel restaurant east of
Nashville, and a high-speed game of chicken with the nighttime
truckers, we rolled into Memphis about midnight.
A room in Memphis cost us $18.74, but after an hour of searching for
a bed, we were glad to get it. The innkeeper assured us the price was a
special low rate because the room had no TV. But our window offered
a grand view of the dual adult drive-in theaters across the street. The
