The Tar HeelThursday, July 20, 197815 Baseball team loses three straight bows out of regular season race ; - ' : ' it , -'-"- ' - . - -i x Yonakor stretches for put out. By R.L. Bynum Sports Editor In the past week, Carolina's baseball team experienced a pound of bad news and a couple of ounces of good news. In addition to losing three straight games, two to league leader Louisburg, the team lost the services of yet another pitcher. Oh, yes, the good news. Pitching ace Greg Norris has returned to the team (see related story). The summer league team began their disasterous week by losing a tight 6-5 decision to last place Campbell. Errors hurt the Heels in that game. A throwing error by Lloyd Brewer in the eighth and a dropped ball by Larry Gates in the fifth led to two costly unearned runs. Mike Brewer took the loss to even his record at 4-4 on the season. Perhaps the worst news came Thursday, when the school announced that sophomore pitcher James 'Peanut" Parks had been placed on academic probation by the school. That ends his season and drops Carolina's pitching staff to a scant four men. That number would have been less, had Norris not returned. The weather was bad Saturday night, and for the Tar Heels, the results of the night were likewise. Louisburg stormed in and swept a double header from Carolina, and also blew away any regular season championship hopes. In the first game, the Heels went two extra innings before finally bowing to the Hurricanes, 6-5. Carolina had the winning run on third base with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh inning, but a freak double-play did them in. In the nightcap, with the score tied in the seventh, Louisburg exploded for three runs to gain a 6-3 victory. The biggest loser of the night, however, was previously undefeated pitcher David Kirk. The senior righthander had to pay the price of having few pitchers, as he lost both games in the double-header. His record is now 5-2 (see related story). Carolina is in action tonight at Atlantic Christian, and they then host them again Friday night at Boshamer Stadium. They continue their home stand against UNC Wilmington Sunday night, and finish the regular season Monday night, by again hosting Atlantic Christian.
