The Winston-Salem Journal reported Thursday that the thieves high school dropouts who had apparently turned to car theft to support themselves had strewn many of the documents near the spot where they abandoned the car but hid many others in a deserted house and tried to sell them. ' The Journal reported sources close to the investigation say the papers, including a map of U.S. missile silo locations, surfaced after a student told his teacher he knew of some documents. The documents were in a trunk that belonged to Graham Martin of Winston Salem, the last American ambassador to South Vietnam. He had taken the documents with him when he fled Saigon before if fell to the North Vietnamese in April 1975. Wets conducting low-key campaign SANFORD (AP) Next Wednesday's liquor-by-the-drink vote in Sanford appears to be, quite literally, no contest. If anybody's in favor of mixed drink sales, they aren't saying so. Most Sanford churches are taking part in the one-sided fight, with many ministers including anti-drink handbills in their Sunday church bulletins. Senate panel rebuffs Brown WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday unanimously rejected Defense Secretary Harold Brown's plea for hundreds of new military projects. . Instead, the Senate panel followed the course of the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday. They simply re-submitted the same defense authorization bill vetoed by Carter but minus the big carrier the president didn't want. DID YOU FORGET TO REGISTER TO VOTE ON LIQUOR-BY-THE-DRINK? "Today there are a broader base of students taking the SAT and going to college," Richard Cashwell, UNC director of undergraduate admissions, said Thursday. The drop in North Carolina averages is due to a change in the type of students taking the test, rather than a decline in the level of preparation, said Walter Jacobs Jr., associate director of the College Entrance Examination Board regional office in Atlanta. There has been an increase in the number of students taking the test, he said. UNC Associate Vice Chancellor William Strickland, a former principal of Chapel Hill High School, said more students want to go to college because they believe it will open job opportunities for them. But he said he is not convinced the SAT is measuring nccuratelv what students are being taueht Biking, riding, running: Classes offered in area By ANNE-MARIE DOWNEY Staff Writer Hiking, horseback riding and long distance running are among the upcoming activities to be sponsored by local recreation departments. For wildlife enthusiasts, the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department is planning a Full Moon Hike at Eno River State Park. The hike, led by park naturalist Floyd Williams will begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the State Park Building off Cole Road in Durham. Classes offered by the department in backpacking and horseback riding will begin Monday. The backpacking class will meet on four consecutive Mondays at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Municipal Building. Among topics to be discussed are N.C ensemble to perform this Saturday The UNC Wind Ensemble will present an old-fashioned band concert at 1 1:30 a.m. Saturday by the Old Well. Works to be performed include Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, Gliere's "Russian Sailor's, Dance" and Anderson's; "Burgler's . Holiday"." "For instance, vocabulary building isn't being emphasized in schools the way it used to be." Figures released by the College Entrance Examination Board shows the 1978 state score average to be 390 on the verbal portion and 424 on the math section. The scores last year were 394 on the verbal part and 425 on the math section. The national averages last year were 429 on the verbal test and 470 on math. The verbal average remained at 429 this year while the math average dropped to 468. Cashwell said there are several reasons why North Carolina SAT scores are below the national average. "You have to look at North Carolina's average income level,, which is among the lowest in the nation," he said. . 1 Studies have indicated students from poor families are likely to score lower on the tests, Jacobs said. "Almost all colleges in North Carolina use the SAT scores exclusively to admit students," Jacobsvsaid. Now even a student who wants to enter a college with relatively low admissions standards will be taking the SAT, he said. equipment, map and compass use and minimum impact on the environment. The course will conclude with a weekend trip to Linville Gorge in the North Carolina mountains. Horseback riders can register for lessons in hunt seat riding, a jumping style which will be taught at Miss Pittypat's Riding School in Durham. There is a $40 fee for the eight one-hour lessons. All three activities are being offered by the department's Outdoor and Nature program. The program tries to give Chapel Hill residents a chance to leave the suburban environment and enjoy nature.
