Wednesday. November 15. 1978 The Dailv Tar Heel 5 Cram: Heels -.must respect v Cava Saturday Dick Crum doesn't quite have them figured out, but he's on to something that might explain the Tar Heels' Jekyll and Hyde personality this year. Something's got to be screwy when a team plays like the Tar Heels did against Miami of Ohio and Richmond and then so well when challenged by a South Carolina or a Clemson. "Proper respect of your opponent is so important," Crum said at his weekry press luncheon Tuesday. "The people we've played well against we've taken very seriously, like Clemson Saturday. And then there are games like Miami and Richmond." After a three-week road trip, Carolina (3-6) returns to Chapel Hill Saturday for homecoming against lowly Virginia. Crum is trying his best to build up the 2-7 Cavs. "I'm concerned we won't have proper respect for them either," Crum said. They went right after Clemson and Maryland and they really are a good football team. If we don't go out there with a big effort we'll be in trouble again." Defensively, the Tar Heels were the best they've been all year long against the Tigers, Crum said. Freshman linebacker Darrell Nicholson played well enough to win ACC Rookie of the Week honors. It was a good day for tailbacks, too, as Amos Lawrence picked up over 90 yards and Doug Paschal had his best effort of the season. "With 1,200 yards between them that's good production for. that position," Crum said. "Doug Paschal is the kind of player we need around here to win. He's gained a lot of respect around the league this year." Crum related a story about freshman quarterback Chuck Sharpe, who didn't wear glasses or contactsuntil this week. Quarterback coach Cleve Bryant noticed Sharpe squinting last week in .-practice- s- he searched For "pass receivers. "He didn't know he couldn't see," Crum said. "We took him to the doctor and found out he's got 20-90 vision in both eyes. Now he's wearing soft contact lenses." By JOHN FISH Staff Writer 1 ... - A new type of challenge faces the UNC men's fencing team as it opens its 1978-79 campaign, while the women's team looks for a high national ranking. After winning the ACC championship seven straight years under Coach Ron Miller, last year's men's squad was dethroned by Clemson in the ACC tournament after posting a 10-5 record, including wins in their last nine matches. So instead of facing the pressure of defending the title, this year's team must regroup to regain the conference crown and hopefully secure a national ranking. "We're eager to prove last year was a fluke and get back on top where we should be," said Miller, who is in his 1 1th year at Carolina. "Everyone's healthy and working hard. It's going to be a pretty good year." One reason it might be a good year is the return of the top two fencers in the saber division Al-America Rich Weil and Stan Schulman, winner of last year's Perm State Invitational.- These two players provide the Heels . with an "exceptionally strong 1-2 punch," Miller .said. Competing along with Weil and Schulman in the saber are second-year fencers Sam Weather and Tal House. Joining the squad -this spring" will be Barry O'Dell, last year's No. 3 man in the saber. Miller believes the addition of O'Dell should add significant deptrwto the strong saber division. ';. ' In the epee division, Tom Killian and Paul Conway return to occupy two of the three positions. Both have- had outstanding pre-seasons. The third division, the foil, is the big question mark of the squad. "The foil is our most uncertain weapon. It is the key to our success," Miller believes. The only sure returnee in the foil is sophomore Steve Bachman, who is coming back after an outstanding freshman year. First-year fencers Scott Cohen and Larry Turner have also been placed in the foil division. But the real key in the foil rests in the question of eligibility with last year's team captain Mark Scott. Scott has been injured two previous seasons and Miller is hopeful Scott will be ruled eligible to participate in spring action. Also returning in the spring will be second-year fencer Keith Herron. ' "If we get improvement in the foil, this could rank among the best teams we've ever had," M iller said. ' So far this season in open tournament competition, the Heels have fared very well. In last week's Ft. Lauderdale Open, the squad won four medals and Miller was pleased with his team's performance.. -But Miller stressed that the road will get tougher for his squad. Battles with top 10 teams including Pennsylvania, M.LT. and Columbia provide the Heels with "across the board, the toughest schedule in history," Miller said. Other difficult opponents should be Ohio State, Air Force and conference schools Maryland and Clemson. "Our goal is to rank among the top 10 fencing teams nationally" Miller said. Last year we had a good dual meet record, but we did not do well in post season competition. 1 think we can make a better post-season showing this year." Leading this year's squad will be seniors Cathy Swan and Cathy Deener and junior Beth Forsyth. But a big addition to the team will be Louise Ackerman. Ackerman transferred from N.C. State where she finished fifth in the national championships last year and earned All America status. Ackerman . should provide the Heels with much needed experience for their long, rugged schedule.
