Munchies ? Joi
for elusive better
u the ' quest
burger
By CAROLYN WORSLEY .
h usually happens to most folks at least
once during a weekend, especially on these
hectic football weekends.
The feeling might strike at 2 p.m. when
you're the 14th person in line at the Teller
Two. Or it might be 7 p.m. and you're late for
a 6:30 cocktail party.
In any case, you find yourself pressed for
time and suddenly famished. Must be time
for that all-American solution a burger.
But if you're searching for that better
burger on Franklin Street, the solution
might not be so simple, since once you've
decided its hamburger you want, you still
must decide where to get one. And then
there's the dilemma of what kind of burger to
get.
If you're in a hurry, the best bet tor a quicK
meal is in a fast food restaurant, as the name
implies. On Franklin Street you could go to
Hardee's or to its cousin up the street,
McDonald's. These two establishments
offer not only the regular mustard-catsup-pickle-garnished
hamburgers and
cheeseburgers, but also their own lines of
burger concoctions.

At Hardee's the word is big. Big 1 win, Big
Cheese, Big Deluxe. McDonald's specifies"
not only big but how big as well; they just
don't call it a big cheeseburger, it's a
Quarter-Pounder With Cheese. Or without
cheese, if you'd rather. McDonald's offers
two other McDonaldland burger inventions
as well: the Big Mc and the McFeast.
Or you can go to Roy Rogers' Family
Restaurant Roy's for short. There are no
fancy names for regular burgers here they
are listed simply as "sandwiches" under the
hamburger and cheeseburger platter
. selections. Then there's the Double-R-Bar
Burger, a ham-and cheeseburger hybrid.
Hector's is known mainly for its menu of
international foods, as well as its late hours.
But the men working the hot grills can turn
burgers out in a hurry, too.
Of course when time is not an important
factor there are alternatives to the fast food

feast, as many regular restaurants on
Franklin Street offer some form, of
hamburger.
Shoney's offers two of its own brands of
.hamburgers. The "All-American
. Hamburger," the menu claims, is one "you'll
remember from the good ole days,"
complete with mustard and relish. In honor
of the giant-size, puffy-cheeked statue
planted in front of some Shoney's.
restaurants (but not Chapel Hill's), Shoney's
offers the "Big Boy Hamburger:" two beef
patties, cheese, lettuce and "Big Boy" sauce
on a sesame seed bun.
The Zoom Zoom and the Rendezvous
both offer burgers, but the Rendezvous'
cheeseburger prices stop where the Zoom's
hamburger prices begin.
Spanky's hamburger prices start where
the Zoom's cheeseburger prices end, but
one must give Spanky's credit for variety.
The restaurant offers not only "The Burger"
with lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onions,
but also the- Cheddar Burger, Bacon
Cheddar Burger, Bleu Cheese Burger,
Mushroom Burger, Mushroom, Bacon and
Melted Swiss Burger, Chili Burger and the
Chili Cheddar Burger. Also at Spanky's
there's a choice of kaiser roll or English
muffin to have your burger served up on.
.Troll's, the local bar tucked under.
Jordan's Le Charolais Steak House on
Rosemary Street, sticks to the hamburger
basics nothing fancy, just a hamburger, a
cheeseburger or a bacon cheeseburger.
And there's more options still.
You can eat a hamburger in the soda-shop
atmosphere of Sutton's Drug Store or the
down-home atmosphere of Brady's or The
Porthole. Devour one in the dark at the
Ramshea3 Rathskeller or chomp in time to
Beethoven in the Carolina Coffee Shop or to
the beat of Night Shift at the Madhatter. You
can munch-out on one after a good night of
partying at Breadman's, and Looking Glass.
Cafe, Carolina Grill, Grillmaster, Western
Sizzlin, Continental Cafe and Weiner King
provide more burger variety.
All these choices make the simple solution
to the I've-got-to-have-a-burger-quick
; syndrome complex when you get down to
specifics. .
And that's not the end of it. Once you've
located your cheeseburger (or hamburger,
as the case may be) in paradise, there's
the extras to decide on. Burger and fries? All
the way? Maybe hold the mayo. Perhaps the
search never ends.
