II ii Meets Jo
After a three-week road trip that included losses to
Richmond and Clemson, Carolina's Tar Heels have limped :
home just in time to finish out their season in Kenan Stadium
against Virginia Saturday and Duke next week. '
Any wisecracker back in August who predicted the Heels
would be 3-6 going into their Homecoming game probably
would have been led off by the little men in the white coats.
But painfully for Dick Crum, it's true Carolina will be a
below-. 500 team this fall.
But leaving the parade, Homecoming queen and the rest
of the weekend festivities aside for now, there's a football
game ooino on out there, and Tar Heel suDoorters could feel
a bit less nauseous about the season if Carolina could dump
the Cavaliers and Blue Devils at home. r
Predicting Virginia to be 2-7 at this stage wouldn't have
been nearly as outrageous. The Cavaliers have beaten Army
and Virginia Tech, but what worries Crum about Dick
Bestwick's team is the way Virginia's played in recent weeks :.
against Clemson and Maryland. The Terps struggled to a 17
7 win last week.
"They're a good team. You can see that just from the films.
If we don't gear ourselves mentally for a tough game well be
in trouble again," Crum said.
Carolina won 35-14 last year in Charlottesville. The last
time Virginia beat UNC was in 1973.
r avalier fullback Tom Viqorito is the man Carolina has to
stop. Against rugged Maryland last week he grinded out 146
yards. Bestwick isn't big on passing with sophomore
quarterback Mickey Spady, so Carolina can expect to see
Vigorito and halfback Greg Taylor (460 yards) carrying it a
lot. UNC's defenseled by linebackers Buddy Curry and
Darrell Hicholson, held Clemson to only 14 first downs last
week. ' :
For eight Tar Heel starters itH be a different kind of
Homecoming; they all played high school football in Virginia.
One of them is Amos Lawrence , who had his best day ever
last year at Virginia by setting an ACC record with 286 yards
rushing. Lawrence has 745 yards now, still with a shot at
1.000 this year. - v . -
Tar Meets launch basketball
with Mine-White matchup
Put up the nets, polish the court, paint the
free-throw lanes it's basketball season,
and the Tar Heels will unveil their 78-79
edition approximately 30 minutes after the
end of the Homecoming football game
Saturday in the annual Blue White game.
Carmichael Auditorium is sold out for the
event.
Returning lettermen Mike CKoren, Al
Wood, Pete Budko, Dudley Bradley, Ged
Doughton, Jeff Wolf, Rich Yonakof, John
Virgil, Dave Colescott, Randy Weil and
Mike Pepper along with newcomers Jimmy
Black and Eric Kinney will be divided into a
blue and white squad, and the teams will play
40 minutes worth of basketball.
The game is expected to be more intense
than in the past simply because players are
still competing for some hotly-contested
starting positions. .
At center, Wolf and Yonakor are battling
it out. At small forward it's Bradley and
Wood. Doughton, Colescott and Black are
vying for the point guard spot, and Virgil has
competition from Bradley at big guard.
Carolina plays an exhibition game against
Poland's national team Nov. 24 and opens
the regular season Nov. 29 at Northwestern.
The Big Four" Tournament in Greensboro is
set for Dec. 1-2.
