Friday. November 17 197$ Th Daily Tar Hem 1 1 i i . 777) ft Carolina tourney gives Mo ck9 wrestlers a chance to try out new positive outlook . -. .V By GEORGE BENEDICT ; , r' Staff Writer , ' UNC wrestler CD. Mock has a goal this year to win a national championship. If all those stories about the power of positive thinking are true he'll win it. On paper, Mock has a very real chance at a national title. Wrestling at 1 26 pounds last year as a freshman, he advanced to the NCAA. : quarterfinals and barely missed All " America honors. To Mock, however, it is attitude ; which can win an individual match or ' a national championship. His attitude is indicative of a positive trend on this year's wrestling team. "The main obstacle to any wrestler is yourself," Mock said. "If someone believes they can win, they'll win." He added, though, "there's a slim line between cockiness and confidence." This new positive attitude could make the difference for this year's team, Mock said.-Last year's squad finished the regular season at 9-2 and was runner-up in the ACC. Mock said he couldn't explain the difference in team attitude this year. "Everybody is a team this year," he said. "Everybody is confident; there's a sense of team unity." . He added last year some wrestlers did have a negative attitude because they expected to be beaten. According to Mock, that type of feeling is gone. "We feel we can beat anybody," he said. k r t V I x I UNC's Desn Brior ...will start at 177 Collegiate wrestling is set up so individual wrestlers rather than teams advance in NCAA competition. Team championships are determined by the number of individual winners. Mock named several wrestlers other than himself which could advance jnto national competition, like Carter Mario at 158, Dean Brior at 177 and Norm Walker at 190. In the conference,, UNC's toughest competition could come from last year's ACC champ, N.C , State. Carolina's only two regular season defeats last year came against State, and Mock said the Wolfpack had a good recruiting year. The two teams will meet several times this year in dual matches and tournaments, Freshman Nancy Radford is North Carolina's lone entrant in the AIAW Cross Country Championships Saturday in Denver, Colo. Radford, the Tar Heels' top runner all season, qualified for the 5,000-meter national race with a 10th place, finish at the regional championships two weeks ago. "Nancy is a very aggressive runner and has improved at every meet," Coach Hubert West says. "She doesn't care who she's running against, she just loves to run. I think she'll fare well." Over 200 runners from across the country will compete. The Carolina women's volleyball enters an eight-team field for the Southern Regional Tournament today and Saturday in Durham. The squad will be dividfidcinia-two-pools-for the single elimismtion'first Toundv The four winners JscwhcF then play double-elimination, with the winner and runner-up qualifying for the national championships. Carolina's pool includes Duke and the state champions from South Carolina and Kentucky. N.C. State, theNCAlAW winner, is in the other bracket. "We've been in sort of a slump the last few matches," UNC coach Beth Miller says. "However, we played better in the state tournament and looked good in the finals." The UNC men's and women's swim teams wrap up their preseason schedules with the ACC Relays Sunday in Raleigh. Other teams competing are Duke, Virginia, Wake Forest and N.C. State. The meet features 1 6 relay eventsand two t diving events. No4arascoi?eswill be Sportshorts Four athletes honored Four UNC athletes have recently been honored for participation in their various sports. Golfer John McGough is on the eight man NCAA all-star squad which is competing against a team from Japan this week in Pebble Beach, Calif. McGough won his first match Wednesday, defeating Taichiro Kanatani 6 and 5. McGough earned third-team All-America honors in 1977-78. A two-time All-ACC selection, McGough placed second in the 1978 conference tourney. Trackster Karen Stevenson was recently presented the June P. Galloway Award by the NCAIAW, an annual award based on leadership, sportsmanship, scholarship and athletic ability. Stevenson place 24th in the 400-meter hurdles at last year's AIAW national meet and is captain of the 1979 Tar Heels. Betsy Fahl, a junior from Wilmington, Del., was recently named to the Deep South All-Star field hockey team following a three-day tournament in Greenville, S.C. Fahl, a member of UNC's jayvee team this fall, was one of 44 players selected for four different teams to compete in Southeast Regional tournament held last weekend in Virginia. Rick Marvin, a mid-fielder on UNC's 12-3-4 soccer team, has been selected to the national squad that will represent the United States in the Youth World Cup qualifying matches Nov. 27-Dec. 17 in Honduras. Would Neivton gravitate toward O'ICeefe? Like the apple gravitated toward Newton. You see, Newton was the beneficiary of a bump of enlightenment. Undoubtedly, he would have been amenable to other enlightening stimuli. For example, the hearty, full-bodied flavor of O'Keefe. The smooth and easy swallow. The fascinating, long-lasting head. As thousands of others after him, it is only logical that he would have said, "It's too good to gulp!' Import .JI from Cenada by Century Importers, Inc. Mew York, MY including this weekend's Carolina Invitational. The tournament is designed for individual competition. No team scores are kept. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. today inWoollenGym and run throughout the day. Finals will be held Saturday in Carmichael Auditorium after the Blue-White basketball game. This will be the season opener for the Tar Heels, who decided not to attend their scheduled debut at the Southern Open last weekend. Head coach Bill Lam said the team was not physically ready for competition, and decided to cancel. Mock said he felt it was because the team was not mentally ready to compete. He added, however, "A week can make a big difference, and we're ready now." It might be said Mock has been ready all year, he hasn't stopped wrestling since his NCAA defeat'. He spent the summer as part of a U.S. team which wrestled in Iran. While Mock , and the other wrestlers easily won their matches, it was not athletics which gave them the most vivid memories. The poverty is unbelievable, Mock said. "There's no middle class and 90 percent of the people are very poor." The American group left before the current wave of civil unrest. While Mock says from a wrestling standpoint the trip was enjoyable, he doesn't plan to return. Unless Iran plans to hold the Olympics, that is. kept. "We'll have a chance to see how good each team is," Carolina coach Frank Comfort says. "And we look forward to every opportunity we have to swim against N.C. State." Comfort plans to use the meet to decide the Tar Heel traveling squad. UNC will enter nine women in foil competition and four men each in sabre, epee and foil divisions in the Penn State Invitational fencing tournament Saturday and Sunday in University Park,. Pa. Carolina's Stan Schulman is the defending champion in the epee competition at Penn State. Rich Weil was third in epee last year. Twenty-six schools will compete with 100 to 150 entries per weapon. The women's foil and men's epee are scheduled;, for Saturday with: the 'men's sabre and foil 'to follow on Sunday. The Carolina women's golf team travels to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend for the 54-hole Lady Gator Invitational. The top 15 teams from last year's AIAW National Championships Carolina was 10th will compete along with three schools in Florida. The Tar Heels' last competition was the NCAIAW tournament two weeks ago which they won. "The girls are high coming off the win," Coach Dot Gunnells says. "They always get up for better competition. Tar Heels not- making the trip to Gainesville will participate in the Better Ball Tournament today at Duke. I y- ... " V- I .' 1 w 1 '.' ? s - ," s I :i , t . SR.--?: f " ' ; I " f . But for some, like Fred Borch (L), whose time of 9:50 was best among males, there was a turkey waiting at the finish. For the unidentified corpse below, there was only the wet ground. Jeannie Crane was the fastest woman, and - she teamed with Lindsey Linker, Carol Rodgers and Sonja Adrouny to form the fast women's team. Roland Rust, Jim Lee, Paul Teske and Marty Pomerantz won the men's team competition. Chris Brookhouse was the first male over 40 to finish the race.
