UNO takes Cup again The Tar Heels won two championships, basketball and wrestling, and had five second place finishes. Carolina finished no lower than fifth in any sport, The Carmichael Cup was named in honor of the late William D. Carmichael, Jr., of Chapel Hill and UNC, and is annually awarded to the conference school that compiles the highest point total in the 13 conference-sponsored sports. By JOHN FISH For the third straight year, North Carolina has won the Carmichael Cup, symbolic of overall athletic excellence in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Carolina totaled 68 points for the 1978-79 sports season to finish four and one-half points ahead of Clemson, which captured five of the conference's 13 team championships. Maryland, the only other school to win the cup, finished third with 58 and one-half points followed by N.C. State with 58. Virginia finished fifth with 45 points; Duke had 41 and Wake Forest had 24. South Carolina defeated the Tar Heels 8-1 in the finals of the eight-team tournament and also qualified for the team championship to be held June 3-1 1 in Iowa City, Iowa. - Coach Kitty Harrison's netters finished their spring slate with a 6-8 record and 2-1 conference mark. ; In addition to the team qualifying, Carolina freshman Sandy Fleishman qualified for the national singles championship to be held along with the team championships. Carolina's men's squad did not qualify for the nationals but did have one doubles team selected to participate in the individual championships scheduled for May 25-28 in Athens, Georgia. Dek Potts and Gary Taxman comprised one of two doubles teams selected from the Southeast and South Atlantic regions. The tandem combined for a 18-1 regular season record and were chosen by the NCAA selection committee because of their excellent regular season record.
