Replacing three All-ACC performers isn't
easy. Head baseball coach Mike Roberts will
be out to prove it can be done when the Tar
Heels open their season tomorrow evening in
the North Carolina Collegiate Summer
League against North Carolina Wesleyan in
Rocky' Mount.
Jim Atkinson, Carolina's career home run
champ, Roy Clark, the ACCs leading hitter,
and Greg Norris, the winningest pitcher in
Tar Heel history, will peddle their talents to
the pros in the June free-agent draft. Despite
these losses, hitting and pitching still appear
to be the team's biggest assets.
Jim Rouse, who hit .322 and finished
second in runs batted in with 33, returns in
left field to anchor a strong outfield. Solid
defensively, Rouse made only two errors in
50 games while splitting time between first
base and the outfield. In center, P.J. Gay
(.286) will give the Heels a base-running
threat with good speed. Promising Byron
Spooner, an excellent defensive outfielder,
will be in right field.
Scott Bradley (.309 with 31 RBIs) and
Lloyd Brewer (.279) will handle the catching,
Outfielder Jim Rouse, left, all-conference
pitcher Bill Gallagher right, and Coach
Mike Roberts, below, return this summer
to lead the Tar Heel attack. Carolina's
home opener will be Saturday night
against Atlantic Christian College.
with Brewer seeing action as the designated
hitter and at first base.
Hard-throwing left-hander Bill Gallagher
finished with a 7-1 mark on the year and
fanned 94 batters in 72 innings while making
the All-ACC second team. Gallagher will be
leaving the team following their Alaskan trip
and filling his shoes will be tough. Another
southpaw, Mike Brewer (1.48 earned run
average), did a good job out of the bullpen
this spring, but may be counted on to start
more often this summer. David Kirk, Bill
Muser and James "Peanut" -Parks provide
balance from the right side.
Freshman shortstop Craig Shumock
(.294) and part-time first baseman J.D.
Henderson (.260) are the lone returnees in an
inexperienced infield. J.V. grads Jeff
Aldridge (IB), Mike Baucom (2B) and Eddie
Waynick (3B) are other possibilities.
The Tar Heels will play a 30-game summer
league schedule in addition to taking a two
week trip to Alaska June 10-24 to play 13
games against three semi-pro teams.
Defending champion Louisburge College,
N.C. Wesleyan, UNC-Wilmington and
Atlantic Christian College will be the other
clubs represented in the league.
