By SAMMY BATTEN The chances of making a college varsity athletic team as a walk-on are slim. Making the team and becoming a starter is even less likely. Tar Heel baseballer Lloyd Brewer has managed to accomplish both of those things in his three years at Carolina. Following a standout career at The Hill School in Pennsylvania, where he starred in football and baseball. Brewer came to Carolina with what he described as perfect timing. "1 came to school here at a good time, right when we had a coaching change," Brewer said. "Coach Rabb had left without doing much recruiting. sThat gave me a better opportunity." - A somewhat disappointing freshman year left Brewer as the apparent backup catcher to Dwight Lowery in 78. But when Lowery was sidelined with rheumatic fever last year,. Brewer became the starter. He started at each of Carolina's 55 games behind the plate, catching all but two innings. The Heels gained a third-place finish in the College World Series and posted a 38-17 record. Brewer was named to the all-tournament team at the Southern Regional, but the highlight to a fine season came when he received the Walter Rabb Award as the team's most improved player. "It was a good feeling," Brewer said. lt topped off the end of a great year for me, the team, everybody." Thisear-Jtrewer played in fewer games but managed to increase his batting-average to .279 and match his RBI total of 26. Despite a strong finish, the Tar Heels fell short in their goaL to return to the College World Series. The last part of the season we could have beaten anyone," Brewer said. "Wc lost some important conference games early in the season. We just didn't get as many breaks as last year." ... As the Heels prepare for their summer league season. Brewer will see action behind the plate, as the designated hitter, and at first base. He sees the summer play as a chance to work on things. Without the pressure to win the conference championship, there is a more relaxed atmosphere for learning and experimenting. Brewer said. He plans to work on his hitting and has a goal of a .300 batting average this summer. Brewer said his biggest thrill as a Tar Heel was playing in the College World Series last year. With this summer's work and a little luck next spring maybe he can repeat that thrill. Summer baseball games June 1 5:00 N.C.
