Women's tennis
Lady netters travel to nationals
looking for a little luck
By JOHN FISH
Carolina Coach Kitty Harrison says jt will
take a lot of luck for her women's tennis
squad to fare well in next week's AIAW
national championship tournament in Iowa
City, Iowa.
"I'll be delighted to get in the top 10, but
that's probably a dream," Harrison said.
"We could surprise them though. It really
depends on the luck of the draw."
The team seeds and draws for the 26-team,
single-elimination tourney will not be known
until Sunday though, keeping the netters in
suspense about who their first round
opponent will be Monday morning.
"We could be fed" to the wolves the first
round and then place into the consolation
bracket or we could go on a couple of rounds
and advance," Harrison said. "It's very much
luck." ,
Harrison will stay with the same lineup she
used throughout the spring. Freshmen
Sandy Fleischman and Jennifer Balent will
occupy the top two singles positions and the
No. 1 doubles spot. In singles, senior Susie
Black" is in the No. 3 position, with Margaret
Scott in No. 4, Nancy Davis in No. 5 and
Janet Shands in No. 6.
The other two doubles teams will be Scott'
and Davis in the No. 2 spot and Black and
Lisa Dodsen in No. 3.
Harrison said she expects eight teams to
be seeded in the tourney, probably including
University of Southern California, Stanford
University, University of Florida and
University of Miami. She added there is no
way Carolina will be seeded. The team play
will be June 4-8 followed by the individual
championships June 9-13.
UNC freshman sensation Fleischman will
be the squad's only participant in the
individual competition. She qualified for the
honor by placing in the regional tournament
May 13.
Since the regionals, Fleischman has been
the only Tar Heel to see tournament action.
She has been playing in aJ California
invitational tourney during the past week.
The single-elimination individual
competition features 64 individual seeds and
32 doubles teams.
