UNC globetrotters keep on traveling By JOHN FISH From the sands of Hawaii to the igloos of Alaska, the Carolina globetrotters, more commonly known as Coach Mike Roberts UNC baseball troops, have been busy travelers during the past three months. Over spring break, the Heels ventured to Hawaii for six games against the University of Hawaii, then ranked No. 2 in the nation. Carolina came away with no wins during their trip but the players enjoyed an excellent vacation in the sun. Currently, the squad is on a two-week trip through Alaska for a 1 2 game slate against three semi-pro teams. The Heels left their busy North Carolina Summer League schedule with an 8-1 record and occupancy of first-place in the league. Roberts said before the trip he was hot worried about how many games the Tar Heels would win in Alaska and it's probably a good thing he didn't care. The Alaskan league features the best semi-pro players in America, according to Roberts. The league annually attracts the best college ball players in the United States by recruiting players nationwide. The league itself has great backing, evidenced by the 15-month advanced planning that Roberts needed to schedule the trip. Two Carolina players, junior Dwight Lowry and Louisburg junior college transfer Otis Nixon, will compete against their teammates during their tour. The two Tar Heels are playing for the Kenai team of the Alaskan league through the summer. Freshmen Scott Bradley and Bill Gallagher will play in the league next summer. The highlight of the trip probably will be the Annual Midnight Sun Game at 1 1 tonight in Fairbanks, Alaska. Today is the longest day of the year and gives Alaska 23 hours of sunlight. Carolina's travels provide great benefits for the squad. The personal experience would have to rank as the major asset of the trips. But, also, the old cliche goes, playing against the best makes you better. And through traveling UNC is improving the athletes as ball players but, most importantly, as individuals. Of course, the invitations to UNC are also a compliment to the caliber of ball the Heels play. Carolina's baseball program has progressed tremendously during the past three years and, under Roberts, seems to be gaining more enthusiasm. And the program will continue to grow in stature and prestige as the Heels travel across the country. A few days before Carolina began summer league play, Roberts was tossing batting practice to some players. Pitcher James 'Peanut' Parks sat in a chair in front of the dugout asking Roberts questions about the new recruits as he pitched. "Did you get everybody you were after?" Parks asked. "Everybody," a gleaming Roberts said. "1 got everybody I went after." It is no wonder Roberts wasn't turned down. Who wouldn't want to be a Carolina Globetrotter? Martin rehired Billy Martin, fired just 1 1 months ago as the manager of the New York Yankees, returned Monday to New York once again to manage the Yankees. The twist of events marks another episode in the never-ending gallery of surprises with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. Steinbrenner fired Martin last July 24 after the Yanks had stumbled to l0' games behind the Boston Red Sox. Former Yankees pitching coach Bob Lemon took over the coaching helm and guided New York to its second consecutive World Series crown. It was just Ave days after Martin was fired that the unpredictable Steinbrenner stunned the Yankees Old-timers Day crowd with the announcement that Martin would return to the club in 1980. . ! . - Martin's early appointment seems to stem from Steinbrenner' s discouragement with the Yanks lackadaisical attitude on the field and hopes the coaching change will have the same effects as last season. The Yankees are currently in fourth place in the American League East division, 914 games behind the Baltimore Orioles. Lemon will move up to the general manager's post in the Yankees organization.
