Drama post aids undergraduates By MEL AN IE MODLIN The UNC department of dramatic art, criticized in the past for overemphasizing graduate training at the expense of undergraduate education, has hired Daniel E. Scuro to serve in the new post of director of undergraduate studies. Scuro, who holds a doctorate in theater from Ohio State University, has been described by dramatic art department Chairman Arthur L. Housman as a man "in the business of teaching solely for the benefit of students. "Finding such a person is harder than you'd imagine so many people in our field are there because they want to do private research or direct plays for their own glory,' said Housman. The search for a director of undergraduate studies began two years ago. "At that time the search wasn't public knowledge," Housman said, "but, then, as now, we saw a gap in our undergraduate program and decided to find a very special person to fill it." Scuro, a former high school teacher who also studied eight years to be a Jesuit priest, was the unanimous choice of the department's search committee. "After a nationwide search and a thorough screening of applicants, Dan Scuro seemed the only choice. We notified him of our decision, but he informed us of other commitments he had at the time Our patience paid off," Housman continued, "because now we have him on our faculty." Scuro will start teaching part time in the second summer session and full time in the fall. Scuro is no stranger to Chapel Hill, having served as guest professor at UNC several summers in the past. On one occasion a group of Drama 35 (Acting) students drew up an unsolicited letter of praise for Scuro, suggesting he be made a permanent member of the faculty. This action only reinforced Housman' s belief that Scuro, besides being a gifted performer, was a teacher "strongly committed to teaching in general, and to the teaching of undergraduates specifically."
