In UNC's homecoming concert, Southern-styled funk-rock band Mother's Finest frenzied a sellout crowd of more than 1,600 people in Memorial Hall Friday night. Known nationally for its energetic musical style and stage performance, the band brought a fast-paced 75 minute show, that featured earthshaking sound, high-energy vocals and. action-packed choreography. From the show's opener "From the Fire," when the group stepped onstage amid dry ice, blinking lights and a screaming crowd, to the last pre encore number, "Somebody to Love" off their latest album Mother's Finest Live, the band kept the house on its feet as the excitement level rocketed. The highlight of the show, was sexy lead singer Joyce "Call Me Baby Jean" Kennedy. She captured the crowd with hearty vocalizations of "Baby Love," "Love Changes," "Give It Up" and "Piece of the Rock," backed up by the wailing voice of Glenn Murdock. At one point in the concert, while the band took off onGiveilt Up," Kennedy took charge and dashed downstage challenging the audience to prove which selection was the loudest. : After Kennedy cast her vote for the raging crowd in the balcony, the group's drummer Barry "B.B. Queen" Borden sustained the momentum with a thundering, funk-filled drum solo that brought volumnious cheers of "Go ahead, go ahead, go ahead!" from the enthusiastic audience. "Guitarist Gary "Moses Mo" Moore and bassist Jerry "Mr. Wizzard" Seay added to the frantic stage antics, occasionally darting from the back of the stage to the front, rolling on their backs and kicking their legs all the while 'playing without losing a beat. Keyboard artist Mike Keck, a Raleigh native, and M oore led the way with solo spots on "Piece of the Rock" while "Mr. Wizzard's" base rhythms boomed out on"Somebody To Love." At the band's first exit, the chanting and clapping audience called for more, and the band strutted back to the stage, obliging the fans with a rendition of "Mickey's Monkey." Several minutes later when the band tried to make another exit, the crowd again began a loud rally that brought Mother's Finest back on stage with "I Don't Wanna Come Back." : Finally, the band ran offstage for good, but the crowd still chanted for, more as the house lights came on. Backstage after the show, "Baby Jean" Kennedy talked about the excitement and enthusiasm she felt with the Chapel Hill crowd. "The' people were immensely k stupendous and magnificent; they were wonderful," she said. "I really felt at home and comfortable. We'd love to do it again." When asked about the group's decision not to answer the crowd's third call for more, she said laughingly, "We were hardly prepared for three encores tonight. I remember when it used to be hard just to get one." DTHATKTy Jams . v .v.r-: ft s t DTHScott snvpm THE Daily Crossword by Judson G.
