Virgil answered when opportunity knocked. Carolina head basketball coach Dean Smith is fond of telling about the accomplishments of his players, be they Ail-Americans ' or the last in off the bench in a rout. One of ne things he's most proud of is how they play during their last season. "I can't remember one player who didn't have his best season during his senior year," Smith told reporters at Picture Day more than two months tgo- "No matter how good someone had played in his first three years, he always improved. This year we're phased to have five seniors." ReSd Tuvim For a while this season, it looked as if Smith would be proven wrong for the first time. John Virgil, a senior, found himself riding the bench for all but a few minutes each game, displaced by freshman James Worthy. Virgil, who averaged 5.8 points per game as a sophomore and 6.3 as a junior, was expected to challenge for the starting spot left by Dudley Bradley's graduation, but Worthy became only the third player in Carolina history to start in his first game. Only Phil Ford and Mike O'Koren had preceded Worthy as rookie starters. Now, with Worthy out for the remainder of the season with a broken ankle, Virgil is finally getting the chance to keep the "senior year" streak alive. Starting last week for the first time this year against Wake Forest, Virgil scored nine points and made three steals in 22 minutes. Start no. 2 against Clemson Saturday produced 12 points and three more steals in 24 minutes. Virgil's scoring average still is only 4.1 points, but remember, he was getting just a few minutes per game until now. "It relaxes me a lot to start," Virgil said last week. "I can get more in the flow of the game. And I know I'm going to be in there a lot of the time. It's a chance for me to contribute to the team." The contribution everybody looks at most is scoring, and everybody Gold n silver-plated blazer Hbuttottt. 3 large. 4 small: with script in block initials (allow 2 wnaks Iin delivery) 1 17.50 M Ofd Well Music Box Fine Gift Plays "Hark the Sound in antique finish wood ' Downtown w uyu rranKiin rates 25 words or less Students U.75 Non-Students '2.75 Add Ht (or uch additional word 1.00 mora lor boMd ad or bold face typ 10 parcant dlacount for ada run 5 conaacutivt day Plooaa print wary cla arly announcements FROM A BICYCLE to a bong the prizes will ttir Gm imagination. In fact, Marquette ex-coach and NBC basketball announcer Al McGuire has nicknamed the Carolina swingman "Instant Offense." But Virgil's most satisfying addition is his defense. Though 6-foot-6, Virgil often finds himself matched up against a smaller, quicker guard. Yet, in the last two games, it has been Virgil making the timely defensive play; his six steals in those games rank second to fellow guard Dave Colescott's seven. "I think my defense has vastly improved," Virgil said. "I feel much more comfortable with it now." Carolina teams have shown a unique ability to play solid basketball even when losing a top player. After the Tar Heels lost Tommy LaGarde halfway through the 1976-77 season and Walter Davis and Ford temporarily during the NCAA' playoff s they still finished second in the country. Now UNC has bounced back with two ACC wins after losing Worthy. Part of it as in 1977 is having so many seniors on the team. Virgil is getting more time and so is Rich Yonakor, who sparked Carolina with 12 straight points Saturday. ' Clemson head basketball coach Bill Foster found another part of Carolina's success: "Hell, when you've got seven or eight high school All-Americans on a team, you're going to play good basketball." Certainly, the sidelining of Worthy is bad news for Carolina. But no team can any longer afford to depend on one player. Smith's Tar Heel squads have always relied on deep benches not just to fill a void left by an injured player but to spell people throughout a game. Virgil has spent most of his time this season on the bench; now that he is starting, Virgil has shown he's been ready to play his best ever. Carolina fans should consider themselves fortunate "Virg" is a senior.
