A quick look at Mike O'Koren's
statistics for Tuesday night's Caroline
William & Mary basketball game would
give a fairly good indication of the
performance of the entire Tar Heel team.
Or William & Mary, for that matter.
O'Koren had what can only be called
an off-night shooting just 5-of-14 from
the floor and 0-of-2 at the foul line but
he did the things no one notices 11
rebounds, seven assists.
That's the story of the game. Carolina
sank only 45 percent of its field goal
attempts, but the Heels grabbed 40
rebounds and totaled 20 assists.
And they drew boos from the capacity
crowd in Carmichael Auditorium when
they went to a spread offense midway
through the second half on the way to a
71-61 win in a lackluster game.
Tm very happy with the way we
played," UNC head basketball coach
Dean Smith said. I just wish we had a
better percentage of the shots we were
getting because we got a lot of good shots.
"I thought we played hard," Smith
said. "The crowd wasn't into it like they
usually are."
That may be the problem playing non
league games in the midst of a hotly
contested Atlantic Coast Conference
race. It was a team nobody in the stand
knew about," said Carolina's Al Wood,
high in the game with 26 points.
But O'Koren said the team knew about
the Indians. "We were ready," he said.
"We remembered William & Mary
knocked us off two years ago. And it's not
real hard to get motivated when you look
at James (Worthy) over there on
crutches."
O'Koren, though, had no answer to his

The North Carolina wrestling team
begins an important week of action at
7:30 tonight in Gastonia when the Tar
Heels face Clemson.
UNC coach Bill Lam said the match
was moved to Ashbrook High School in
Gaston County to accommodate
wrestling fans in that part of the state.
"The alumni expressed an interest in
seeing a wrestling match as did the high
schools in the area " Lam said. "The
coach at Ashbrook brings his kids to the
wrestling clinic here and he wanted to see
us."
In addition to : tonightVi match.. w-.&hL?
Clemson, the Tar Heels face other
Atlantic Coast Conference foes
Maryland and N.C. State in the next
week.
"Three matches in a week will be a real
test," Lam said. "They will be critical in
terms of momentum. If we get through
them undefeated and uninjured, we
should go through the rest of the season
undefeated."
Clemson and the Tar Heels battled
earlier this season in the Lehigh
Invitational.

scoring woes. He scored but four points
in both the Wake Forest and Clemson
games but he took only three shots in
each game and tallied just 10 against the
Indians.
"My jump shot (Tuesday) felt as good
as I can remember," O'Koren said. "1
haven't (lost confidence in my jumper).
I'm putting it up a lot more. This game 1
had the open shot."
Smith said O'Koren turned in a "great
all-around game, except for his shooting.
He momentarily lost his jumper for this
game, but it will be back.
"Some people say he's in a slump, but
don't believe it," Smith said. "Tonight I
told him to look for his shot more (than
against Wake and Clemson). This is just
one game he didn't shoot well. But his
passing and rebounding were
outstanding."
Carolina had trouble shaking the pesky
Indians for the first 11 minutes of the
game before the Tar Heels outscored
them 10-0 in a 1:39 stretch to go up 28-18
with 6:52 left. U NC went on to lead 36-27
at the half.
The Tar Heels built as much as a 16
point margin in the second half, including
with 1:39 remaining, but William & Mary
scored on eight of its last nine possessions
while Carolina's reserves were in to get to
the final 10-point deficit.
For Carolina, John Virgil also scored
in double figures 10 points on 5-of-6
shooting. Billy Barnes led William &
Mary with 18, followed by Scott Whitley
with 17.
The Tar Heels, now 13-4, face The
Citadel and Furman in the North-South
. Doubleheader this weekend in Charlotte.
And O'Koren said he's ready to return to
his scoring form.
"Watch out. I'll break out of it," he
said. "I'm devastating in Charlotte."
"They have some tough kids," Lam
added. "We have to beat them down low
(lower weight classes) and pick up some
good scores for superior decisions."
Clemson boasts 134-pound Billy
Marino, who will face Carolina's CD.
Mock. Mock decisioned Marino 8-3 at
the Lehigh tournament but has been ill
recently.
"CD. has been really sick, but he'll still
go," Lam said. "He's that type of kid."
The Tar Heels are not healthy at the
next weight class either. Both Pete Pierce
and Norman Masterson are out with
injuries at 142.
Clemson has several good wrestlers in
the! upper weights, which has Lam
concerned. "We'll win at 158 and 167 but
they're strong at 177 and heavyweight
and 190 might be their best," he said.
UNC enters the match coming off its
largest winning margin of the season, a
44-3 triumph over Duke last week. "Our
kids were awesome against Duke," Lam
said. "We won the individual classes very
easily. After the first three matches it
seemed like Duke didn't care."
Carolina is 2-0 in the ACC and 5-0
overall.

Old Dominion just recently regained the
No. 1 spot in the women's polls and
currently shares the top position with
Texas.
Now 18-1, the Monarch's only defeat
this year came from Louisiana Tech, the'
team they beat in the AI AW title game in
Greensboro last March.
Against Tech last season, Lieberman
demonstrated her ability by scoring 20
points, getting seven rebounds, dealing
seven assists and recording six steals.
Sports Illustrated has labeled
Lieberman "the most dominant player in
basketball" and "the pioneer, the leader,
the superstar, the finest all-round player
of her game in the land." That's quite a
mouthful, but the magazine also said
she's the favorite role model for young
girls with basketball on the brain.
"1 just do what Nancy Lieberman
always does," a 5-10 senior said. "I carry
myself in that manner, and I think that's
important because women haven't had
that (a female athlete) to look up to."
Lieberman also places a lot of
importance on the direction women's
basketball is taking and said she has been
instrumental in the current trend.
"I've helped it...because I've been very
fortunate to get the notoriety others
haven't gotten," she said. "When people
come to see Nancy Lieberman play,
they're going to see that Nissen is a good
player, Donovan is a good player,
McGlade is a good player.... There's
plenty of notoriety to go around."
