The pieces described here offer classic styling in new, vibrant colors. Chino pants in bright blue, yellow, white, pink and black, plus the traditional khaki and navy blue, are a neat and versatile look. Team them with a loud Hawaiian shirt or the classic button-down blouse. These pants always look neat and require little if any ironing, so they travel well. The shirtdress, a fashion basic that never really disappeared from the fashion scene, is making a big comeback this spring. Choose a striped or print fabric in yellow, blue or black and white and team it with a blazer in a contrasting color. For extra fashion mileage, try a skirt and blouse of the same fabric, which together give you the look of a shirt dress and, apart, mix and match with the rest of your VVssksndsr f it ', ' V' ' " i X:-:-- :'::-y wardrobe to update your look for the '80s. Waistlines are still important, but belts are narrower and softer this year. A one-and-a-half-inch cloth belt in yellow, black or bright blue would be a good choice to go with summer pants and skirts. Day dresses are a little shorter this year, creeping up to the knee cap. Pants also are shorter, with width at the bottom of the leg dictating the length. Narrow pant legs should just touch the ankle bone, while wider legged pants should cover the ankle and graze the top of the shoe. Pants are still tailored and pleated. Even jeans are making fashion news this spring. The new baggy jean is a comfortable relief from the skin-tight designer jean which dominated the denim scene last year. Wear baggies with low heeled western boots and a contrasting sweater or a loose fitting sweatshirt in bright yellow or red. 'Vy- ' ' V ;;; . Short-sleeved sweaters of soft or nubby knits can be worn against bare skin to show off a spring break tan or with a blouse to help ward off the chill of early spring days and nights. The best colors are cream, bright yellow and black, but pastels are also popular. Lace on collars, necklines and at the waist offers a fresh look, bringing feminity to the sharp, tailored lines of suits and pants. A white or eggshell blouse with a lace collar and front will take you from a lunch to a job interview to the disco in combination with the right skirts or pants. 0 Jaci Hughes is distribution manager for The Daily Tar Heel.
