onor groups
pick students
with talent
By SUSAN MAUNEY
Staff Writer
To many students at UNC, the Orders of the Grail,
Golden Fleece, and Vaikyries carry a mysterious
quality.
These groups are no mystery, however; Their
members are selected for outstanding qualities in
scholarship, leadership, and character as well as for
their participation in University activities.
The Order of the Golden Fleece is the oldest of these
honor societies. It was established in 1904, and counts
many distinguished alumni among its members.
Other organizations honoring outstanding
participants in the University community are the
Order of the Old Well, and the Orders of the Grail and
Valkyries.
The Fleece is a selected coed group of campus
leaders as is the Order of the Old Well. The Valkyries
honor outstanding women, and the Order of the Grail
. honors men. Their members have been chosen over
the years, for scholarly achievement, personal
integrity and contributions to the University
community.
Ann Martinelli, president of the Fleece, said that the
Fleece wants nominations for new members that
others believe fulfill the Fleece criteria.
"We usually . induct 25 people each spring,"
Martinelli said. "Only five or six juniors are usually
chosen but it depends on the nominations.
"There are different criteria for each category.
Faculty, alumni, and members of the University
community are eligible for honorary membership in
the Fleece," she said. "Our members are not always
those who are the best know faces on campus. They
are often the silent contributors to an organization."
Former members of the Fleece include former UNC
Chancellor N. Fere bee Taylor, star basketball player
Phil Ford and CBS newsman Charles Kuralt. They
became members as students at UNC. Kuralt will
deliver the 1980 Order of the Golden Fleece
Leadership Lecture to be held sometime before the
order's spring tapping ceremony, Martinelli said.
The Valkyries and the Grail also have many
distinguished alumni including former North
Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Susie Sharpe.
Jeanette Heyward, president of the Valkyries, said
they welcome junior and senior nominations, as well
as nominations for female faculty members for
honorary memberships.
Although the Grail and Valkyries are a joint
organization, Heyward said that they function
separately.
Each order has activities that they concentrate on
during the year. The Fleece is establishing an Upward
Bound Scholarship Program for minority high school
students. Members go to area high schools to talk to
students who may not be considering further
education following high school. The scholarship will
provide a year's tuition and fees to one freshman each
year.
The Grail and Valkyries activities are varied.
Currently, the Valkyries are establishing an annual
award for an outstanding woman faculty member.
The award, named for former UNC Dean of Women
Kathryn CarmichaeL will be based on Valkyrie
criteria for character.
Each organization inducts new members each
spring. They currently are accepting nominations for
new members. Nomination forms are available at the
Carolina Union desk. The forms are due back by Feb.
29.
