MAIJI ST. - cAnnssno By GEOFFREY MOCK Staff Writer A late third-period surge by Norman Walker propelled him past N.C. State's three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion Joe Lidowski to lead the North Carolina wrestling team to a 27-15 victory over the Wolfpack Tuesday night. It was the second victory of the year for Carolina over State and was the Tar Heels eighth dual-meet win of the season, the fifth in the ACC.TheTar Heels, ranked 19th nationally, have now won 21 consecutive dual meets. Pins for State by Mike Koob at 150 and freshman Matt Reiss in the 177-pound class had cut the Tar Heel lead to 21-15 when Lidowski met Walker in the 190 pound class. Lidowski entered the match with a 17-0 record this year and had never been defeated by Walker. Lidowski's streak seemed assured of continuing when he took Walker down with a minute left in the match to take a 7-5 lead. He then put Walker in a cradle, but Walker rolled through and put Lidowski on his back with 10 seconds left to clinch a 9-8 decision and the meet for Carolina. Walker had nothing but praise for his opponent. Joe deserves the credit," Walker said. "He was wrestling tough and had me in a pinning combination. State needed a pin, but I was able to roll through, and get him on his back." Walker also credited the 2,500 spectators in Carmichael Auditorium with aiding him. "This was the largest crowd we've had," he said. "When they get behind you it really helps." UNC Wrestling coach Bill Lam said he felt Walker could beat Lidowski. "I'm very happy for Norman. He's . wrestled Lidowski at least 10 times and never beaten him," Lam said. "We worked all week, and Lidowski was all we talked about. Joe will drop to 177 for the (ACC) Tournament, so we knew this would be the last time they wrestled. We wanted to beat him just once." Lam also mentioned Joe Galli's 13-1 superior decision in the 142-pound class as crucial. "Joe covered a lot of weight, dropping to 142. You usually don't feel good doing that, but he was super. It turned the match around." State jumped to a 3-0 lead when their All-American Jim Zenz gained revenge for his sole defeat this year by decisioning Bob Monaghan 10-5. Zenz dominated Monaghan on his feet and took a 7-2 lead before Monaghan's third-period comeback tightened the m i 1 si Gg09 J Cerollna's CD. Mock (right) hss a held on Ststd's f.'Ike Donzhua ...Heel wrestler defeated his high school teammate match to 7-5, before Zenz gained a reverse late in the period to clinch the match. Carolina came right back with a decision by Dave Cooke at 126 anda21-7 superior decision byC.D. Mock in the 134-pound class against high-school teammate Mike Donahue. Mock had a slow start, but a 10-point third period put the match out of reach. "I felt sluggish at the start," Mock said. "I always have trouble with Donahue. Maybe it's a mental thing. "The third period was mine," Mock said. "Carolina is known for its stamina. We feel the third period is ours." Galli followed with his victory to increase the lead to 13-3. Koob's pin tightened the score; but a superior decison by Jan Michaels and a win by Carter Mario at 167 put UNC up by 11. "I wasn't counting on Jan to win that big," Lam said. OTHRantfy Srisrps "His man tried to elevate him, and you can't do that to Jan." State came back again with Reiss' pin to set the stage for Walker's dramatic win. In a rematch of the decisive match of the last meet, UNCs Jack Parry defeated Greg Steele 4-3. Lam complimented his State opponents. "State has a good team," Lam said. "Reiss is as tough as any freshman in the league except for Michaels." . In many ways the meet was a coming of age for Carolina wrestling. It was the largest and loudest crowd of the season. "Carolina wrestling is growing," Mock said. "It's happening. Look at the crowd tonight. They were really into the match. That's what I came down here for."
