Men to fight
State for ACC
swimming title
By LINDA ROBERTSON
Staff Writer
In the wake of their stunning victory over
N.C. State, the men's swim team has added
confidence for the Atlantic Coast Conference
championship meet in Raleigh today through
Saturday.
Although the Tar Heels broke State's 57
straight dual-meet win streak, they will have a
harder time ending the Wolfpack's 10-year
hold on the ACC crown.
Last year, Wolfpack coach Don Easterling's
squad won 14 of the 18 events and racked up
586 points to UNC's second-place total of 406.
The UNC men will also have to contend with a
strong Clemson team that defeated the Tar
Heels 65-48 in their dual meet earlier this
season.
Carolina appears to be peaking just right as
it enters the meet. The dramatic 58-55 come-from-behind
win over State last week came at
the perfect time, according to UNC coach
Frank Comfort. "It's nice going into the
conference meet having beaten State," he said.
The men's swim team has not won an ACC
championship in 16 years. "We have a young,
but talented team," Comfort said. "Our
program is at the point now where we can go
into every , meet with the realistic goal of
winning it.
The Tar Heels have both of their defending
ACC individual champions back from last
season. Junior Ken Ireland was 1979 ACC
swimmer of the year and the most valuable
swimmer at last year's meet. He won the 100
and 200 yard backstroke events. Junior
Arnaldo Perex is the defending 200 yard
butterfly champ.
Other swimmers expecting outstanding
performances will be sophomore Dave Hansen
and freshman Mark Welker in the freestyle
events; freshman Roger Vredeveld in the
backstroke and individual medley; Keith
Hoffman, Jeff Keyser and senior co-captain
Mike Amaya in the breast stroke; and senior
co-captain Fritz Homans in the butterfly and
relays.

Your bathtub isn't big enough. Neither is Bowman Gray

Club content.
Self-contained underwater breathing apparatus diving began
in the late 1940s as a commercial venture. "The idea of sport
diving only caught on in the last 10 years or so," said club
president Chris Walker, "which is about when we got organized
as a group."
IMs & CLUBS
By CHIP KARNES .
At first glance, Walker doesn't convey the Jacques Cousteau
image of a scuba diver, unless you notice his silver-dollar-sized
watch. "When I first got interested in diving, I wasn't a very
strong swimmer," he said. "
The sport doesn't require overall strength only one of the
advantages women divers have over men, according to Walker.
"They (women divers) usually have a slightly smaller lung
capacity than men, which means they get to stay under longer
on the same amount of air," he said. As a result, more than half
of the 35 active club members are female.
But, only Jacquiline Bisset gets to dive in a T-shirt, To fight
the 50 degree coastal waters, the UNC club wears neoprene wet
suits in addition to the standard equipment: a hood, fins,
goggles and a tank with regulator, or breathing apparatus. "We
also wear BCs," Walker said, referring to buoyancy,
compensator vests, "which help the diver both to maintain

Heiden wins
Olympic medal
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) Beth Heiden,
the diminutive sister of speed skating superstar
Eric Heiden, finally won her own Winter
Olympic medal Wednesday.
The 20-year-old from Madison, Wis., for
whom some had predicted the same kind of
performance her older brother would give,
won the bronze Wednesday in the 3,000-meter
women's speed skating. Later she broke into
tears and said the pressure "got in the way of
our family," but would not explain how.
She finished behind gold medalist Bjoerg
Eva Jensen of Norway and Sabine Becker of
East Germany. She had finished seventh in her
first two events and fifth in the third.
The United States hockey team was assured
of a spot in the medals playoff even before it
took the ice against West Germany
Wednesday night. Sweden's 4-2 victory over
Czechoslovakia assured the Americans of no
worse than a second place finish in the Blue
Division. The top two teams from the Red and
Blue Divisions go into the medals playoff.

So, with complete outfits ranging from $500-800, how can
members afford to dive? "This is where the club helps out,"
Walker said, "because we have several outfits that members can
use for free. After a while, most people get their own goggles
and fins, but the club still supplies the rest."
Countrary to popular belief, the first two problems posed to a
diver 100 feet underwater are not sharks and more sharks. Jaws
is a good story but very misleading about sharks," Walker said.
"There's been very few definite cases of shark attacks the world
over, and the chances of anything happening are extremely
minimal. But most divers have a pretty healthy respect for
them."
The UNC Scuba Club meets monthly -to plan excursions.
"We go to the coast about nine to ten times a year to check out
the shipwrecks just outside of Wilmington and Morehead
City," Walker said. "Our biggest trip of the year will be when
we dive in the Bahamas over spring break."
The remainder of the meeting time is filled with a slide show,
some underwater photography, or a guest speaker from
National Geographic or the U.S. Divers Corporation. The next
meeting will be announced in an upcoming Campus Calendar.
NOTES: The Intramural Office, maintains the Carolina
Tennis Pool, a listing of UNC students, faculty and staff who
play tennis and want to meet new players at a comparable skill
and experience level. Anyone may sign up before March 14 in
the IM office. Shortly thereafter, a complete list will be
published for members of the pool to use for the remainder of
the semester.
.. There is a mandatory clinic for all softball officials at 8
rebuilding the Tar Heels to match their lofty
sixth place finish in . the NCAA
Championships last year.
"We lost three of our top five golfers from
last year, but I think we can have a good year,"
Brouse said. "We're anxious to get underway.
"On paper we've got some holes to fill, but
we've got players that are capable of filling
them, depending on how well they come along
as the season progresses. It will be important
that the juniors give us leadership."
The l l-member squad includes three
juniors Frank Fuhrer, Phil Bland and Doug
Gay that will be the heart and soul of an
otherwise young and untested team. Five
sophomores and three freshmen occupy the
remaining spots on the roster.
"Experience is the thing the squad is lacking
as a whole," Brouse said. The starting lineup
has changed throughout the year and right
now it's undetermined.
"The reason it is so hard to fill the three
positions (vacated by McGough, King and
Sadowski) is because those three players got all
of the playing time last season," Brouse said.
"I'm hoping the younger members of the team
will play up to what we need by the end of the

The Tar Heels tied for 1 3th place with Wake
Forest in the Pan American Invitational in
early February, the only tournament Carolina
has played to date. The squad travels to
Gainesville, Fla., Wednesday for opening
round play in the GaforrInvitational.
Carolina will defend its two tournament
wins from last year in the Palmetto Classic and
in the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. The ll
tournament schedule also includes the Atlantic
Coast Conference Championships at
Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount.
Brouse labeled the 1980 Wake Forest team
the Deacons best since the one on which
touring pros Jay Haas and Curtis Strange
played. Brouse named the Demon Deacons a
"heavy favorite" to capture the ACC title again
this year. He said that Carolina is included in
the "four or five teams that will fight for the
second spot."
