EI eel swimmers
earn AA spots
By LINDA ROBERTSON
Staff Writer
A weary but satisfied UNG women's swim team returned to
Chapel Hill Sunday night, surviving four grueling days of
competition and merciless casinos at the Al AW Nationals in Las
Vegas.
UNC finished seventh, ending the season on a "very positive
note," said coach Frank Comfort.
Stanford won the national title. N.C. State, Carolina's nemesis
all year, finished sixth.
Bonny Brown, Lauren Dupree, Gayle Hegel, Nancy Hudock,
Cindy Shirey, Liz Mesmer, Nance Thompson, Barb Harris and
Cynthia Chilcott became All-Americas by placing 16th or better.
Both the 400 medley relay (Chilcott, Hegel, Harris, Brown)
and 400 free relay (Hegel, Chilcott, Brown, Harris) placed sixth.
The 200 medley relay (Chilcott, Shirey, Harris, Brown) was
eighth and the 800 free relay (Dupree, Chilcott, Mesmer,
Hudock) took 15th place.
For three seniors Bonny Brown, Janis Hape and Lauren
Dupree the AIAW meet marked theend of their UNC careers.
"Those three will be sorely missed," Comfort said. "Bonny is
one of the greatest collegiate swimmers ever, Lauren is a four
time All-America and a consistent winner, and Janis was an Ail
American and a fantastic leader."
Hape was 22nd in the 200 breast. Dupree swam on the 800 free
relay and placed 19th iboth the 1,000 and 1,650 races.
Brown left college swimming in style, taking fifth in the 100
1M, seventh in the 100 free, and ninth in the 50 free.
"That's it for me, 15 years of time well spent. It's not like a
burden has been lifted, but it's time to go on to different things,"
Brown said. "A lot of circumstances could have hindered the
team this year, but we came through and had an outstanding
season despite the injuries and illnesses."
Harris placed fourth in the 50 fly, 13th in the 100 free and 14th
in the 100 fly. Chilcott took 1 2th in the 400 1M and 16th in the 100
back. Mesmer was 18th in the 50 free. Hudock was 22nd in the
500 free.
Cindy Shirey, in addition to winning $16 at the slot machines,
took 23rd in the 400 IM. Nance Thompson, unlike most of the
UNC squad, had a winning streak at the hotel's casino, and also
raced to 15th place in the 400 IM.
But it wasn't all work and no play in Las Vegas. "We all saw
Dean Martin at the MGM Grand and cruised the strip," said
Gayle Hegel, who competed in five individual events, taking
third in the 400 IM, fourth in the 200 IM, eighth in the 200 breast,
ninth in the 100 IM and 1 1th in 100 breast.
"There were slot machines even in the bathrooms. 1 lost 60
cents and. quit," Brown said. "Tony Orlando gave an
unbelievable show, and Caesar's Palace was just awe-inspiring."

Louisville takes
title, 59-54
INDIANAPOLIS All-America guard Darrell Griffith
scored 23 points Monday night to lead Louisville to its first
NCAA basketball championship, a 59-54 victory over UCLA.
Louisville rallied from a four-point deficit with less than three
minutes to play on baskets from Jerry Eaves and Griffith to go
ahead to stay at 56-54 with 2:17 left.
We struggled all day, but still won it," said Louisville coach
Denny Crum." We hung in there when the going got tough."
A low-scoring first half ended with the Cinderella Bruins
ahead 28-26, and they took advantage of Louisville turnovers
and strong play from Rod Foster and Kiki Vandeweghe to build
a five-point lead with 6lA minutes left.
But then Griffith scored a three-point play on an alley oop
cutting the lead to two. which set up Louisville's final surge.

With the North Carolina baseball team
ahead 13-7 going into the last of the
eighth inning, the Tar Heels seemed to
have their fourth straight Atlantic Coast
Conference win in the bag Sunday in
College Park, Md.
But UNC coach Mike Roberts knew
better.
"In Maryland's ball park, nothing is
ever in the bag," Roberts said Monday.
"That park is small and anything can
happen there." ."
It did.

homer by Steve Johanson. 13-10.
Ninth inning. Single; error, single, wild
pitch, sacrifice fly, bloqp single and bloop

Men'tJennis at South Carolina at 2 p.m.
"We had a few plays there in the ninth
we didn't make," Roberts said, "and that
cost us the ball game."
The loss may turn out to be costly, but
for now the Tar Heels are still atop the
ACC standings. Carolina is 3-1 and that
puts them a half game ahead of Clemson
and Maryland who are 1-0.
The Tar Heels bats were booming this
weekend, with Carolina getting 17 hits
Sunday and 18 in the 1 1-6 win Saturday
over Virginia. Ten of those hits were
home runs, and sophomore Scott Bradley
hit three homers against the Terps, setting
a Carolina record for a single game.
The week coming is a big one for
Carolina, with II games in nine days,
beginning with a 3 p.m. contest today
with Ohio in Boshamer Stadium.
"I don't know much about Ohio,"
Roberts said, "but they gave us two great

Carolina right-hander Dave Kirk will
start for the Tar Heels today.
Roberts knows a great deal about the
foe for Wednesday, however, as the Wake
Forest Deacons visit Chapel Hill for a
crucial league game. The Deacons feature
all-ACC performer Brick Smith and are
among the legitimate contenders for the
league crown. Mark Ochal will pitch for
the Heels.
After a day-night doubleheader with
High Point and Pfeiffer on Thursday, the
Heels host Howard on Friday. Then, it's
back to the ACC play w ith home games
against Georgia Tech on Saturday and
Virginia on Sunday.
"This is a big week for us" Roberts
said. "So far, we've been a little
inconsistent on defense and with our
pitching. If we can bring that around and
keep hitting the ball, we'll be okay. 1 think
we'll get better and better as the season
