By NORMAN CANNADA Staff Writer DURHAM North Carolina broke a 3-3 deadlock with three runs in the fifth inning and went on to take a 9-3 victory over the Duke Blue Devils Wednesday afternoon on Jack Coombs Field. The win upped the Tar Heels record to 9-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and strenghtened their hold of first place in the conference standings. UNC is 27-12 overall. "We were very flat in the beginning," Carolina coach Mike Roberts said. I think that had something to do with the day off we had yesterday." The Tar Heels tagged Blue Devil starter Ed Nolan early, getting two quick runs in the opening inning. Shawn Dean led off with a single and scored moments later on a Scott Bradley double and an error by Kevin Rigby. Bradley gave the Heels a 2-0 lead, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Pete Kumiega. Duke came back in the third inning with three runs, two coming on bases loaded walks. With Tar Heel starter Shayne H ammond in trouble, Roberts brought in James "Peanut" Parks in relief. Parks, making his 16th relief appearance of the year, got the win and gave up only three hits in pitching 6 13 scoreless innings. "Peanut was really throwing the ball well today," Roberts said. "His pitching helped keep us in the game after those three runs." Carolina tied the score in the fourth when Craig Shumock singled home Lloyd Brewer. Then the Tar Heels moved to put the game away. Barney Spooner led off the inning with a double and scored when Bradley belted his second two-base hit. Kumiega then gave the Tar Heels a 6-3 advantage with a two-run homer. Ironically, Kumiega's last home run this season came 2 1 games ago against Nolan. "Kumiega's home run really was the turning point of the game," Roberts said. "He took 45 minutes of extra batting practice yesterday (Tuesday) and 1 think it helped him." Bradley's first-inning double extended his school-record hitting streak to 20 games. In all but six of those games, the sophomore third baseman has had more than one hit. Carolina takes on East Carolina at Q p.m. tonight in Boshamer Stadium. The Heels have the day off on Friday before hosting Clemson and Maryland Saturday and Sunday. "This is going to be weekend of the season," "After this weekend we'll how the conference shape our toughest Roberts said, be able to tell s up.
