6 The Tar Heel Thursday, May 22, 1980 news Mount St. Helen's ash has little effect in Southeas I Campus Calendar RALEIGH, AP Ash debris from Sunday's volcano eruption in Washington drifted eastward high in the sky Wednesday on a path that would take it over the western and northern edges of North Carolina. 4 The National Weather Service said pilots reported seeing some ash debris at an altitude of 30,000 feet over Bristol, Tenn., early Wednesday. "Effects on the ground should be negligible, although some brilliance may be added to the evening's sunset," the Weather Service reported. The ash was thrown into the air when Mount St. Helens volcano erupted early Sunday morning., It has been drifting eastward for the past four days. The Weather Service said the densest portion of the cloud was over Missouri, Illinois and Indiana early Wednesday, but thin portions were found as far north as southern Quebec and as far south as northwest Georgia. The. weather service had not calculated how long it would take the cloud to pass over North Carolina, the spokesman said. Scientists do not believe the volcanic cloud will present any physical hazard, especially at that altitude. Geologists said the eruption already has spewed almost as much ash and rock as Vesuvius dumped on the ancient Italian city of Pompeii in 72 A.D., killing more than 2,000 people. - If put in one pile, it would cover a square mile as tall as three Empire State builidngs. Bob Christiansen of the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the volume at six-tenths of a cubic mile. Vesuvius spewed less than three-quarters of a cubic mile of material. The mountain also has emitted huge, unmeasured volumes of steam and water vapor, Christiansen said. In Washington, an estimated 5,000 travelers stranded by the shutdown of ash clogged highways and airports jammed shelters across the state as the death toll from the devastating eruption of Mount St. Helens climbed to 10. Officials estimated that 98 people were missing. Gov. Dixy Lee Ray asked President Carter to declare the state a disaster area and officials kept wary eyes on a dam of mud and debris that stood-between the waters of Spirit Lake and the residents of cities below the mountain.
