Organizations abound
for biding summer time
i
If you are interested in extending your
summer school activities beyond studying
and drinking beer, you might consider
getting involved in a campus organization.
Most organizations maintain some activity
during the summer, and this year, there is a
wide variety of programs available.
The Student Consumer Action Union is
involved "in student consumer awareness.
Their summer projects include publishing
the Franklin Street Gourmet, a restaurant
review booklet, CASH, a guide to
banking in Chapel Hill; and an
orientation planning program for the fall
semester.
Student Government also remains active
during the summer. A major concern is
traffic safety, due to the recent rash of
pedestrian accidents. Other consumer
issues are the rating schedule for bus passes
by the town and transportation board, and
the C bus route controversy. For more
information, call or go by Suite C,
Carolina Union.
The International Association of
Students in Economics and Business
promotes international management
experience and other cultural interests and
remains active during the summer. IASEB
provides a great opportunity for students to
visit abroad and become exposed to the
business world. This summer, six UNC
students will serve traineeships in Poland,
Chile, South Africa, Italy, Finland and
Austria. The UNC chapter has
reciprocated by accepting three foreign
trainees to work for different corporations
in this area. They are from Peru, Brazil and
Germany. Those interested in learning
more about AIESEC should call 967-1222.
Another organization is the student
radio station WXYC. Students are welcome
to volunteer their services as announcers
and producers. The station serves the
Triangle area, Greensboro, and
Fayetteville. If you enjoy talking on the air
or have other related interests contact
coordinator Kevin Wolfe for further
discussion. .
Another group concerning public
address is the debating team. They compete
on the local, regional, and national levels.
The Individual Events team is also
available, and concentrates on developing
public speaking and oral interpretation
skills. Bill Balthrop is the coordinator for
those teams.
The Tar Heel, which is the student
newspaper, needs writers, copy-editors and
photographers. Those interested should
call or go by the Tar Heel office in the
Carolina Union.
TheCampusY is an organization within
the Division of Student Affairs which offers
students many opportunities to work in
varied areas of university and community
life, stressing religious, ethical, social, and
political aspects of the community. Their
upcoming events include two Russian
films and various lectures. Lecture topics
include 'The Role of Political Parties" on
June 12, "Media and Politics" on July 15th
and "Presidential Politics in the South" on
July 22. For time and place call the Y office.
The Carolina Union is sponsoring eight
special interest classes ranging from
clogging to bellydancing to mixology.
More information is available at the Union
desk.
Keeping in shape is important,
especially during the summer months. The
summer intramurals sports program is the
solution to stay fit and trim. The sports
events include basketball, raquetball,
tennis, volleyball and frisbee. The IM
office in Woollen Gym has all necessary
information.
The University Counseling Center offers
a number of group programs. Most meet
weekly for two hours. These workshops
have hints about how to improve your time
management skills, speech anxieties, and
aid in selection for graduate school. UCC is
located in Nash Hall.
