NCAA berth
The UNC lacrosse team has made the NCAA
Tournament for the third time in five years but
its first trip under second-year coach Willie
Scroggs.
The 7-3 Tar Heels accepted a fifth-seed bid
Sunday morning, to face fourth-seed Navy.
"We're awfully, awfully pleased that we have
been selected," Scroggs said. "It's a reflection on
the kid's work."
In 1976 Carolina went to the NCAA
championships for the first time and followed
suit the next year under former coach Paul Doty.
In first-round action No. 1 seeded Virginia
plays No. 8 Cornell; No. 2 Johns Hopkins plays
No. 7 Harvard; and No. 3 Syracuse plays No. 6
Washington & Lee.
Maryland failed to receive a bid for the first
lime in the history of the tournament even
though the Terps beat the Tar Heels. N.C. State,
which also beat Carolina, did not make the
eight-team field.
Carolina's other loss cs tie at the jhands of this
year's Division Ilchampion, Maryland
Baltimore County.
"We've had a few losses, but we've had a few
good wins," Scroggs said.
The Tar Heels began the season with a victory
over No. 1 ranked Virginia and ended the season
with an upset win over then-No. 3 ranked
Washington & Lee.

Balent lone chance for AIAW title
CSsnt
The Carolina women's tennis team lost out in
their bid to repeat to national competition but
sophomore Jennifer Balent qualified for the
AIAW Nationals which begin June 1 1 in Baton
Rouge, La.
Two weeks ago the Tar Heels were knocked
out of the AIAW Southern Region II at Johnson
City, Tenn. by South Carolina 5-4.
- Carolina lost to the Gamecocks by the same
score back in March to account for one of the
team's three losses, -
, Sixteen wins and aN.C. AIAW championship
led the way forlhe berth into the regional.

' Last season the women finished second in the
regional and ended 15th in the nation in the
AIAW Nationals.
Balent is the only hope left for national
recognition. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native
moved from No. 6 to No. 3 by the end of the year
and capped the season by surprising a few No. 1
players including teammate Margie Brown in
the state tournament during individual play.
Balent's play there sent her into the regional
with confidence. Now after qualifying at the
regional she goes into the nationals with
confidence.
"I'd like to play well there," Balent said. "I'm
hoping to have some more good wins. I had one
of my best wins in the nationals last year."
