Smith apparently hasn't let Tar Heel fans down. Smith faced a monumental recruiting task this year, having lost five seniors from the 1979-1980 team. The Tar Heels have solid talent returning next season, including Al Wood, James Worthy and Jimmy Black. But the squad needs some new faces to replace the likes of Mike O'Koren, Dave Colescott and John Virgil. Having recruited only four players in two years, the Tar Heels need a big, talented class of recruits. New Tar Heel recruits are Matt Doherty, a 6-6 player from Hkksville, N.Y.; Sam Perkins, a 6-9 center with a 74-inch armspan from Latham, N.Y.; Timo Makkonen, a 6-11 native of Finland; Cecil Exum, a 6-6 forward from Southern Wayne High, the state 4-A champion; Jeb Barlow, a 6-8 walk-on from Louisburg College; and Al Young, a 6-footer from Hickory High School who is attending UNC on a football scholarship but wants to play basketball, too. "Two players Doherty and . Perkins have a chance to contribute immediately," Smith said. "The others. Doherty and Perkins are two fine student athletes." The graduation of this year's senior class left Smith with only seven recruited athletes on the basketball team. Smith said he hadn't planned to face such a big recruiting year this season, but his small haul the last two years called for action. "We wanted a biggerclass last year," he said. "We like to try and stay with a big freshman class and a big senior class. That way w really don't have to rebuild." i 1111 il'ikijimi . i.. iuii hi. i if . i 'mm. .i-i.ii,. .in, i. im A .; ! ft' Sh'S.zr prd!ccs h!h Jirr.p . . .qualified for NCAA DTH fiic Photo Shuler jumps to NCAA final With basketball recruiting uppermost in the minds of many Carolina fans, the height 7-foot-2 would only mean to them an ideal basketball prospect. However, for UNChigh jumper Lee Shuler, it is this height that qualified him to compete in the NCAA National track and field championships June 5-7 in Austin, Texas. "He has a good opportunity to do well and place in the top six," UNC track coach Joe Hilton said. "His main competition will be coming from Michigan, although we won't really know until we get there." Throughout Shuler's four-year career at Carolina he has proven to be a very consistent jumper. His achievements include two Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the high jump, both indoor and outdoor, - ' . He is also no newcomer to national compt-tition. As a sophomore he placed 10th in NCAA Nationals and as a junior he placed eighth. Shuler also holds the UNC record in the high jump with a leap of 7'2V. "I wish I had another one like him," Hilton said. "He's a real fine young man and has done well both athletically and scholastically." Lee Shuler is going to be greatly miss d in the track ranks next year, Hilton said. "The time comes when they have to leave," he said. "I just told him the other day that he has to replace himself before he ran leave." JULIE TROTTER TUMELEWEED CYCLERY Bicycle end Moped Sales and Service Vlndsor Ross Lotus Puch EXPERT REPAIRS 152 E.
