Thursday. Mav 29. 1980 The Tar HcH news Research fellowship in Ohio m urmo Igv 1 St on O CO Hi i no op p Q I ' u - By Diane Lupton Sonja H. Stone, assistant professor and former director ' of the Afro-American Studies curriculum, leaves today for a nine-month research fellowship at Ohio State University. "That does not at all mean that I am dropping my appeal for tenure," Stone said. A seven-member committee formed in December 1979 to consider Stone's denial of tenure had not presented its report at the last UNC-CH oard of Trustees meeting on April 25. Concerned students had participated in a "show of faces" on April 25 outside South Building to support Stone's appeal, said Quentin Eaton, secretary for the Black Student Movement. Kurt Garret, a BSM member, was spokesman for the group, which Eaton said was endorsed by the BSM at a later meeting. The Board of Trustees will hold its next meeting June 20. Virginia Dunlap, secretary for the Board of Trustees, said she did not know if the committee would present its report on Stone's appeal then. Stone was first denied tenure in February 1979. Samuel Williamson, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, said the granting of tenure is based on research, service and teaching. He said Stone lacked the proper credentials in research. , Stone appealed this decision to the Faculty Hearings Committee and was again denied tenure. Her position as director of the curriculum expired last July 1. She was again denied tenure in the summer of 1979, and appealed that decision also. A special three-member trustee committee pronounced Dec 14 that there was "reasonable doubt as to the objectivity of the tenure review committee in its considerations of Dr. Stone's qualifications for tenure." Stone is charging the University with racism, sexism; violation of academic, freedom, personal malice and -violationof due process of law and equal protection under the law. Her position as associate professor expires June 30. If the full Board of Trustees denies Stone's tenure she can appeal her case to the Board of Governors. George V. Taylor, a history professor and chairman of the committee which reviewed Stone's appeal, said he could not predict the next action the Board of Trustees would take.. "The report is now their property," he said. "It's up to them." Neither the chairman nor the past chairman of the Board of Trustees was available for comment Tuesday night. HIM. X y ( Ccfcol) VJ By Lynda Hettich Work aimed at improving service on Chapel Hill Community Transit's C-route is going on this summer. The Carrboro Board of Aldermen met Wednesday in a budget work session to decide the fate of plans to split the C-route, said Bill Callahan, Administrative Assistant for the Chapel Hill Transportation Department. "Right now we're in a kind of limbo, waiting for an OK from the Board of Aldermen before splitting the C-route. Town Hall seems receptive." Riders on the C-route said service has improved over the summer, but Colleen O'Linn, a summer school student who regularly rode the C-route last semester, said "Service can't possibly get any worse than it was last year. I was left behind on the day I had an exam." The route is financed jointly with money from the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, and the University. In addition to the proposed route split, fares will also increase. Effective July 1, adult fares will be increased to 35 cents and fares on the S and U routes to 20 cents a 5 cent increase. The nine-month pass will cost $60, up from last year's $36. Callahan said there is usually a 10 percent discount provided by the University for students, yet many feel the price is still too high. Marilyn Cloninger, a Political Science department employee who rides the G bus said, "It seems they would keep the prices lower to get more riders." Ricky Buckner, a student who rides the C-route, said "The piice isn't so good, but that's my only way to campus." Dentistry student Charlie Nash said, "I don't like the idea of a $60 bus pass, but it's still a pretty good deal." Despite service complaints, system ridership has increased 6.5 percent from April 1979. To handle this increase in riders, Chapel Hill will purchase 16 new buses which are scheduled to be in operation by October 1. The service is needed, said Callahan, because "there are an incredible amount of people using the system during peak hours."
