6 The Tar Heel Thursday, June 5, 1980 news os up confs sinco Morch SELF SERVE FULL SERVE By Diane Lupton Area gasoline pump prices have gone up an average of 2 cents per gallon since an independent survey published in March by The Daily Tar Heel. Since March 10, the average self-service regular price has risen from 1 16.9 cents to 1 17.8 cents. Other prices rose more. Full-service regular rose from an average of 123.2 to 125.5 cents. Self-service unleaded and premium, which were 121 and 125.1 cents respectively, are now 123.5 and 129.8 cents. Full service unleaded and premium were 126.5 and 129.3 but rose to 129.5 and 132.7 in the three-month period. The three Durham stations surveyed have lower prices on regular gas than stations in Chapel Hill. Northgate Shell, 1 130 West Club Blvd, sells self service regular gas for J 12.9 cents per gallon. Unleaded and premium are 123.7 and 128.8. Full service prices are 126.4, 129.4 and 134.4. Northgate Exxon, 1501 Guess Rd., prices regular self-service at 116 cents. Unleaded and premium self service are 125 and 130 cents. All full service gas is a penny more than self-service. Westside Gulf on Hillsborough Road, has regular gas at 1 1 5.9 cents per gallon, unleaded at 1 26.9 and premium at 129.9. Full service sells for 129.2, 132-2 and 134.8 for regular, unleaded and premium. Some stations have stopped selling premium gas. Two of the 10 surveyed now sell diesel fuel, and a few continue to use half-pricing for their gas. The Texaco Corporation has stopped supplying its stations with premium gas. Most local gas stations agree business at the pumps and in general repair work is stable. "We've been real busy," said Ray Mills of Eastgate Exxon. "We're still selling our quota." "Business is still good and they (prices) haven't . gone down," said C.H. McFarling, owner of McFarling's Exxon. "We never get caught up in our bay (repair) work." Student gets research grant Gary Terpening, a former associate editor of the Daily Tar Heel, is one of 12 students chosen from universities and colleges nationwide to participate in a newspaper management program in Florida this fall. Terpening, a graduate student in the UNC School of Journalism, will receive a $3500 fellowship to attend the program, which is sponsored by the Modern Media Institute of St. Petersburg.
