Tar Heels outlast error-prone Bishops, 12
By Sammy Batten
Steve Streater hasn't pitched a baseball
game in more than a year, but don't tell
N.C Wesleyan's hitters. They thought he
threw just fine without the practice.
Carolina took advantage of S Heater's
pitching and ten Wesleyan errors to defeat
the Fighting Bishops 12-10 Tuesday night,
in Boshamer Stadium for their first N.C
Summer League victory.
Streater hasn't played baseball since his
ock seriously injured
From staff reports
UNC junior basketball player Jimmy
Black, who was injured Saturday morning
in a single-car accident on Highway 15-501
between Chapel Hill and Pittsboro, is now
in "very stable" condition at N.C
Black suffered an unstable fracture of the
cervical spine, team physician Joseph
"Right now he's sort of in limbo until
things settle down," Dewalt said. "Each
day Jimmy improves; h 's better today
than he was yesterday; otherwise, there is
little to add.
"We need to do more special X-rays and
further studies," Dewalt said.
Dewalt's secretary said Wednesday
afternoon that Black would undergo
surgery this morning.
Black's car ran off the right side of the
road and into some trees, according to N.C
Highway Patrol reports.
Spokesmen at the Orange County
Highway Patrol Station could not be
reached for comment
Carolina sports information officials
said Wednesday that their information on
the circumstances of Black's accident were
also sketchy. They said they could only
report that Black had a fractured vertebrae.
There would be no paralysis, physicians
Black, a reserve guard for UNC during
the past two seasons, averaged five points
With the graduation of Dave Colescott
and John Virgil, Black was expected to
play a major role on the team next season.

in relief of starter Franklin Roberts.
The Heels, after falling behind 4-0 in the
first inning, got on the scoreboard in the
bottom of the second thanks to five walks
and two Wesleyan errors. Joe Reto scored
their first run when J. D. Henderson
followed him with a double to center.
Greg Muench, Tom Daily, Lee Sullivan
and Eddie Waynick all drew walks to drive
in two more runs. Shawn Dean's single

Wesleyan erupted again in the fourth

Streater's only lapse came in the seventh
