High winds and lightning caused
blackouts in sections of Chapel Hill
Monday night.
At approximately 6 p.m., during a severe
electrical storm, a large tree fell across a
primary conduc tor on Cameron Avenue
between RoIxtsoii and Kenan streets'
Several lines were damaged, resulting in a
blackout.
Paul Martin, local manager of Duke
Power Co., said the entire southern pari of
town was aliened, including Granville
Towers,. Piitslxno Road, Columbia Street.
Farrington Road. U.S. 15-501 and the urea
beyond Farrington Road. '
"We've had other calls about blackouts
tonight, too." Martin said Monday night.
"In the Orange dove area and on Pincy
Mountain Road we've had problems with
trees falling on lines." Thereswas also some
scattered outage in theQiony VVoodsatea.
Martin estimated that at the jx'ak of the
storm, about 2.000 homes and businesses
lost their power. By 10:34 p.m. power was
restored for customers on the Cameron
Avenue t in nil. which services most of
Duke Power's c ustomers. Martin also said
that by II p.m.. 95 percent ol their
customers had jxwer restored.
The storm also lrft some damage in ot bet
areas of town.

house. "It just fell on the house from Un
wind and storm." Filch said. "We wen in
the family room and didn't know it until
our daughter came home from wotk
around 6:.iO p.m.
"We'ie trying our best to get il cleaned
up." Fitch said. "We've got it (the tree) out
of the way up on the porch.
"I couldn't lell you to save my neck how
much it's going to cost." Fitch said. "It's
going locust right much though."

An informational meeting for those persons
interested in working at WXYC will be held at 7
pm., Wednesday, July 2 in the Carolina Union.
