hello, brick road
Proeress on the project to add chilled
water lines to air-concuuon several campus
buildings is running well.
"We're moving right along," said
GordonRutherford, director of University
Planning. "We hope to have the critical
work done by Aug. 15 ; that's our deadline."
Selwyn Bryant, director of University
Engineering and Construction agreed. The
brick walkways in front of Wilson Library
should be back in place by the time school
starts, he said, unless problems arise.
Bryant also said past problems, such as
rock excavations and uncharted utility
lines, have slowed construction.
Claude Swecker, director of the
University Physical Plant said, "We're
supposed to be finished by the time school
starts. If we're not, it's going to be pretty
close."

The UNC School of Journalism received
a $150,000 grant from Dow Jones fc Co. Inc.
in honor of Vermont C. Royster, former
editor of the Wall-Street Journal.
Royster, a 1935 graduate of UNC, has
been a William Rand Kenan professor of
journalism and public affairs since his
retirement form the Journal in 1971. He
joined the paper in 1936 and was its editor
from 1958 unul his retirement. He won a
Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for editorial writing
and has won numerous other awards.
The School of Journalism Foundation,
headed by Joe Doster, publisher of the
Winston-Salem' Journal and The Sentinel,
will administer the endowment.
"It is the largest single contribution the
school has ever received," said Richard R.
Cole, dean of the Journalism School.
Dow Jones, owner of the Journal,
pledged the money last fall on the
condition that an additional $50,000 be
raised from other sources. Cole said. "That
amount and then some has now been
secured," Cole said.
Income from the endowment will
establish annual Royster-Dow Jones
fellowships andassistantships for graduate
students. Dow Jones Co. owns die Wall
Street Journal.
