6 The Tar Heel Thursday, July 10, 1980 entertainment g-y-mr www 1 Fes rival opens tonight The North Carolina Shakespeare Festival opens its fourth summer season tonight in High Point with the presentation of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid opens Tuesday, and Macbeth follows July 18. The three plays will be presented alternately until Aug. 17. The festival originated in 1977 on an experimental basis. Malcom Morrison, the festival's artistic directdr, came to Winston Salem in 1.976 as dean of drama at the N.C. School of the Arts. The following year he joined with the founders of the North Carolina Theater Ensemble to create the festival. Eleven thousand people turned out for the shows that season. Last year the crowd was in excess of 30,000. High Point was chosen as the site of the festival because of its proximity to the School of the Arts and its excellent theatrical facility. Twelfth Night is the last of Shakespeare's romantic comedies, and is also his most musical. Clearly the play states that the essence of true love springs from unselfish giving. It will be directed by British playwright and director Richard. Continuing with the comic mood, Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid, also known in English as The Hypochondriac, satirizes the medical profession. Peter Bennett returns to the festival to direct Invalid. Shakespeare's tragic tale of Macbeth will offset the two comedies. One of Shakespeare's most artistic and powerful works, Macbeth is the classic study of how humans are doomed by their lust for power. NCSF artistic director Morrison will direct Macbeth. His experience includes extensive teaching and directing in television and films as well as in-the theatrical world. , The fall program features Garson Kanin's Born Yesterday Sept. 16; Preson Jones' The East Meeting of the White Magnolia Oct. 14; and. on Nov. 11 The Heiress.
