Union undrooss chonos
By Susan Garrett
There has been an increase of workmen,
nails, and sawdust inside the Carolina
Union building this summer.
Union Director Howard Henry says he
hopes two significant projects will be
completed and operating by the beginning
of the fall semester.
One project, the transformation of the
old South Gallery lounge into the new
International Student Center, is nearly
completed.
The other, involving renovations on
much of the main floor of the Union, has
j ust started this week. Both projects are part
of a large Union addition project.
"The international students moved in
last week," said Henry, "and are now
where they rightfully belong in the
student Union. They have been shifted
around the campus for too many years."
The center was last located in Bynum
Hall.
The new center has four offices with
service space, a reception area and a
resources center located in the lobby area.
The international students will continue
to use the old South Gallery meeting room.
Henry said the group was still waiting
for needed equipment, "but that always
happens." The new center is already in
operation though there are still boxes,
uncrated furniture, book? and new carpet
scraps cluttering the scene.
The project now getting underway is the
renovation of the Union snack bar area and
part of the main lobby.
. Henry said ARA Services Inc., which
recently took over operation of campus
food service, has changes planned for the
snack bar.
The present dining x area will be
partitioned just south of where the bulletin
boards are now.
The main entry door to the snack bar
area (by the newspaper machines) will be
sealed, leaving the other door nearest the
front of the Union as the only entry to the
snack area.
All vending machines will be relocated
in the rear of the snack bar, an area already
partially partitioned and filled with stacks
of chairs. Henry said that area will be
operated by the Union, not ARA.
ARA services plans to open a salad bar
called the Greenhouse by the snack bar
door where the vending machines were,
Henry said.
The lounge furniture in the Main South
ride board location has been moved to the
other side of the stairs facing Great Hall,
next to the pay telephones. The Main
South area will be the new place for
solicitation.
The bulletin boards presently in the
dining area will be removed, but bulletin
boards will be added in the vending and the
Main South areas.
