Thursday, July 31. 1980 The Tar Hcrl 23B features Construction to alter campus By Martha Johnsen Students aren't the only ones who grow and change during four years at Carolina. The University itself, as demonstrated by the present construction and the plans for more, also will grow and change substantially during the next four years, according to reports from the University's Facilities Planning Office. Several buildings now under construction will be completed for use within a year. Construction on the physical education and intramural building, located across the street from the Carolina Union, should be finished in late fall, said Rachael Long, staff planner for the Facilities Planning Office. The addition of three floors to the Health Sciences Library is scheduled to be completed by May 1981. Soon after completion of the addition, the. bottom three floors will be renovated, Long added. By the fall of 1981, the addition to the Carolina Union should be completed. Some renovation of the existing structure will come after the addition is finished, said Long. The new central library, the foundation of which already is being laid next to the Union, is expected to be built by February 1982, Long said. It will house most of Wilson Library's materials and include more stack space and seating. "The design for the Wilson Library renovation is being done now, but renovation will not begin until the central library is completed," Long explained. Wilson will be remodeled to store special collections, a new media center, plus those library materials used less frequently. The completion dates for these buildings and additions under construction are the dates contractors have set to finish construction and not the dates the buildings will be available for student use. "After the building is completed it takes time for the building to be approved for ONLY $10.00 FOR THE SEMESTER SPECIAL SUBSCRIPTION RATES AVAILABLE FOR ALL UNC STUDENTS ON AND OFF CAMPUS GUARANTEED DELIVERY TO ALL DORMS 7 DAYS A WEEK And Introducing to on-campus students THE DURHAM SUN You can receive The Durham Sun Mon.-Sat. and Tho CnnHnv Mnrninn -AaraH Cnr Hnlw fclrt (( ! w wwiiu iiiwiiiiii i w i uiu i si ni I j yi I UiUU for tho Qomoctor To order your subscription cut out the coupon and mail it with your payment to: Circulation Department Herald-Sun Papers 412 W. Ground will be broken within a week or so for the new art department building, located in the parking lot south of Ackl and Art Museum, Long said. The new facility will be large enough to hold a larger art library, a 300-seat lecture hall, and all those art classes now being held in Lenoir and Caldwell halls. The completion date is set for early fall 1982. Ackland Art Museum will be renovated soon after the move into the new structure. Minor renovations in four campus buildings will begin within the next few months, said Long. Playmaker's Theatre will have an exterior face-lifting and work done inside on the lobby and restrooms. Graham Memorial will have some maintenance and housekeeping changes, such as a revamped lab theater, to make the place more convenient for the drama department. Bingham Hall will be changed to house more adequately the speech department. This change includes a better auditorium for Reader's Theatre productions. Beard Hall will be renovated to make more efficient use of space in classrooms and laboratories. A ramp for the handicapped also will be added. Planning money has been made available for several other proposed structures. Long said. A cancer center building, now in the design stage, may be built near the faculty laboratory and office building on Manning Drive. A family medicine building with a community care center has been proposed but not completely designed. It would Ik located below the F-parking lot off Manning Drive. An addition for the public health and environmental science building has also been proposed but not yet designed. Construction on the student athletic center, which is to be located behind Hinton James dormitory, will not begin until adequate funds are raised, since the building will not be funded by the state. "The fund-raising drive is j ust beginning," Long said. Although several of these new structures are being built on former parking lots, no additional parking lots are being planned. "Where would they be?" Long asked. WELCOME 8" ROOM OFF CAMPUS ADDRESS: PHONE CHECK ONE: HERALD 7-Days $10.00 Mon.-Sat. $8.00. Mon.-Sat. $8.00 .
