"Among the 23 fraternities, there are so many different kinds of houses, there is a diversity within the system," says Inter-Fraternity Council President John Blumberg. "' "Some frats are completely different extremes, and some are even diverse within themselves," Blumberg adds. Gale Osborne, president of the campus Panhellenic Council, agrees about the diversity. "Go into any sorority house on campus and you'll see the stereotypical sorority girl," she says, "but you'll also see a girl who can party anybody under the table and one who is really into religious fellowship." Blumberg says fraternities develop leadership qualities in its members, because they offer chances for students to govern themselves. "The students run the house' he says. ''The day-to-day running of the house is a big financial undertaking." Fraternities also provide an organized social life and a chance to form long-term friendships, Blumberg says. Osborne stresses involvement on campus. "Greeks don't just sit around and party," she says. "We're not into ourselves so much. We are very active on campus and in addressing various issues." Fraternities and sororities also sponsor service projects, most of which raise money for charities, Blumberg says. The , Panhellenic Council, which governs the campus' 12 predominantly white sororities, raised about $20,0CO for charity last year. The individual sororities also had their own service projects, Osborne says. This fall, Panhell and the IFC will co-sponsor a fraternity and sorority transit system, to help provide transportation for the elderly. Twenty-five percent of the undergraduate men on campus belong to a fraternity and 18 percent of the women are sorority members ; Those numbers stand to change when the fall rush season arrives. Sorority rush begins Sept. 8. Osborne says she expects more than the 1,000 women who rushed last year. Registration for sorority rush ends Wednesday and f , v. - ; 4 -,- '-,'.v.vw;- :-: .vv.',vAv.-.'Avi,.' J Ths Alpha Phi A!pha fraternity put on a step show there is an $8 fee per rushee to pay for computer costs, Osborne says. Fraternity rush also begins soon, with three weeks of informal rush. The rushees will attend parties and later have three nights of formal rush where bids are announced. Because there is no registration for fraternity rush, Blumberg says he doesn't know how many men rush annually. A survey conducted by the IFC last year reveals that the average cost for fraternity members living in the house is $185 monthly. The survey did not include costs for those not living in the house. The $185 includes approximately 10 meals weekly, a room, social fees and dues to the national chapter, Blumberg says. The average cost for a sorority member living in . the house is about $750 per semester, Osborne says. The cost for out-of-house members averages $300 each semester. Fraternities and sororities remain, for the most part, segregated institutions. There are three predominantly black fraternities on campus and they are governed by the IFC. However, the three predominantly black sororities do not have membership in the Panhellenic council. There is a handful of black members in predominantly white fraternities, but none of the campus sororities have both black and white members. Both Osborne and Blumberg say that the black and white fraternities! and sororities are trying to decrease segregation in the system, by working together on projects and sponsoring integrated social events. i i Fcrmsr cegsrs he'p cut in charity prcjsct v:- .-..:: J i Greeks participating in annual Derby Day k- fc.. - :i CHAPEL HILL TRANSIT II route I iwiii I JUwl 1U.
